Luxury Chile + Argentina Itinerary

The Beautiful South of South America

Together, Chile and Argentina make up 20% of South America, and this 19-day itinerary covering the south-west of the continent is certainly comprehensive.

While Argentina enjoys almost 3000 miles of South Atlantic coastline, its entire western border is hugged by Chile, itself boasting 4000 of coastline along the South Pacific Ocean.  The location, and sheer size of these two neighbours result in one of the most diverse and spectacular collection of landscapes on Earth. Across Argentina you’ll find desert, mountains, jungle, vast steppes and brilliant blue glaciers. And of course, the “Paris of South America”, Buenos Aires and its strong European influences can keep visitors enthralled for days, and nights.

Chile’s landscape is a series of contrasting panoramic dramas delivering a visual feast beyond imagining. As well as the Lake District and Patagonia, you’ll visit San Pedro de Atacama, an oasis in the heart in the world’s driest desert, the Atacama Desert, plus Torres Del Paine and The Central Valley.

In Argentina you’ll learn to cook a traditional meal in San Antonio de Areco, ride horses across the Pampas and learn about gaucho life, learn about pre-Colombian ruins, desert dwelling indigenous people and the rich wildlife of Salta and Jujuy. Then in Chile you can stay in tented camps, a lodge or estancia and choose from activities such as trekking, bike-riding, rafting and fishing. Combine all that with trips to galleries, restaurants, national parks, and an evening tango show – well, we said this itinerary was ‘comprehensive’.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Atacama Desert is the driest nonpolar desert and the second driest overall in the world.

The itinerary

Torres del Paine National Park

Considered by many to be the most beautiful National Park in the world, Torres del Paine is famous for its immense granite peaks rising up out of the glaciers, turquoise blue lakes and virgin white ice fields contrasting with lush, green forests. Twenty-five species of mammal including the elusive puma, the ostrich-like rhea and the now protected guanacos can be found in the park, as well as over one hundred species of birds. You’ll explore all this from your base at the incredible Tierra Patagonia Hotel & Spa.

Crossing the Andes from Salta to San Pedro de Atacama

A private driver takes you from your hotel in Salta and over the border to the Atacama Desert in Chile. The Argentine border post at Paso de Jama may very well be the remote border post in the world – it certainly feels like it at 4,300m above sea level. From here you continue to San Pedro de Atacama. Travelling through the foothills of the Andes, as the altitude increases, picturesque towns and villages give way to vast wide-open spaces and jaw-dropping views.

Explore the Perito Moreno Glacier

Set off for Los Glaciares National Park with a private guide for a glimpse of the first breathtaking views of the Moreno Glacier with the imposing Andean Mountains as a backdrop. As spectacular as this first entrance may be, it pales compared to a close approach where the constant sounds of this “living” glacier shake the air. Gigantic blocks of ice frequently break away and crash into the lake, spraying hundreds of feet into the air and sounding like distant artillery fire. The startling contrast of colour, sound, motion and size creates a continuously changing mosaic of indescribable beauty.
