To the Bhutanese people, Phobjikha Valley (Gangtey) is both spiritual and mystical, and unique in Bhutan due to its abundance of flora and fauna. When our clients visit Bhutan, a few nights spent in Gangtey is always a highlight of their trip.

Our Experience at Gangtey Lodge in Bhutan

Gangtey is a quaint rural village on the western slopes of the striking Black Mountains, which border the Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park. Part of Gangtey’s great charm is that it remains almost completely untouched from the outside world. It is also one of the most important areas for wildlife conservation in Bhutan and throughout the winter one can see the endangered black-necked cranes. There are also muntjaks (deer), wild boars, sambars, Himalayan Black Bears, leopards and red foxes in the surrounding hills.

Gangtey has a seemingly endless valley floor dotted with traditional farms and the occasional yak. The wonderful Gangtey Lodge, owned by Brett and Omar Melzer who run ‘Balloons over Bagan’ in Myanmar, has the best views from any lodge or guest house in the valley.

It is almost impossible to find a fault with Gangtey Lodge; the service is excellent, and the staff are friendly and professional. However, it is the hotel’s great sense of place that makes it our favourite place to stay in this magical country. With elegant local fabrics, exposed wooden beams and brickwork, Gangtey is as comfortable and luxurious, as it is Bhutanese and homely.

The lodge’s living room is a wonderful place to reflect on a day spent walking in this picturesque valley. The main living area contains intimate dining tables where meals are served ranging from Western, Bhutanese and Asian dishes. The food is organic and delicious.

For the winter months, all 12 suites have underfloor heating, and in every room, there is a spacious living area and a standalone bathtub with the most memorable views out to the valley. The interiors inside the rooms reflect the rich cultural heritage of Bhutan.

Gangtey is one of the best valleys to explore on foot, offering trails for both gentle walkers to advanced trekkers. The lodge also has a number of mountain bikes allowing guests to explore on two wheels on either an easy bike ride through the village or up in the mountains.

A stay at Gangtey Lodge would not be complete without taking a moment to enjoy a private fire roasted stone bath mixed with Artemisia leaves. Lie back as you savour the last hues of the retreating sun and the stars take their place in the darkness of the night.
