The Mekong Delta is often called the rice basket of Vietnam’, producing over half of the country’s rice, alongside a rich variety of tropical fruits like mangoes, durian and pomelo.

Getting to The Mekong Delta

The closest major hub to the Mekong Delta is Ho Chi Minh City. From here, you can reach the heart of the delta by car. Mỹ Tho and Vĩnh Long are about one and a half to two hours away, Cần Thơ is roughly three to four hours by road, and Châu Đốc, near the Cambodian border, takes around six to seven hours. Ho Chi Minh City is an ideal starting point for exploring the delta’s floating markets, canals, and riverside villages.

Alternatively, you can explore the Mekong Delta by river cruise. Multi-day itineraries can begin in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, travelling along the Mekong River and its tributaries, and concluding in Ho Chi Minh City. Some delta towns may require additional land transport to reach from the main river route.

OUR FAVOURITE TIME TO VISIT

The best time to visit the Mekong Delta is during the dry season, from November to April, when rivers and canals are easy to navigate and the weather is sunny with lower humidity. Visiting in this period also allows you to explore floating markets, riverside villages and fruit orchards at their most vibrant.
