The Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam is a region unlike any other. Life here revolves around rivers and canals, and boats are a key part of daily living. You can explore floating markets like Cai Rang, where traders sell fruit, vegetables, and local food directly from their boats. These markets are lively, colourful, and show traditional trade.
The countryside is peaceful, with rice fields, coconut palms, and small villages. You can enjoy boat trips, cycling, and quiet moments away from busy cities. The delta also offers authentic local food and experiences.
Floating Markets: The Mekong Delta is famous for its vibrant floating markets, such as Cai Rang and Cai Be, where traders sell fresh fruit, vegetables, and local goods from colourful boats.
River Life and Boat Tours: Glide along calm canals and main rivers in small boats or sampans, passing stilted homes, fishing villages, and farmers tending their rice paddies.
Local Workshops & Farming: Visit family-run workshops producing rice paper, coconut candy, and puffed rice, and wander through lush fruit orchards and plantations.
Cultural Sites: Explore ornate temples like Vinh Trang Pagoda (My Tho) or historic houses in Sa Dec, with a mix of French and Chinese architecture and fascinating stories of local residents.
Rural Exploration: Cycle or stroll through quiet hamlets, over small bridges and country roads, observing everyday life in villages such as Ben Tre, the coconut capital of the region.

The Mekong Delta spans around four million hectares and supports roughly 18 million people, with its floodplains, wetlands, mangroves, and paddy fields home to more than 450 species of fish.
The Mekong Delta is often called the ‘rice basket of Vietnam’, producing over half of the country’s rice, alongside a rich variety of tropical fruits like mangoes, durian and pomelo.

Luxury River Cruise The closest major hub to the Mekong Delta is Ho Chi Minh City. From here, you can reach the heart of the delta by car. Mỹ Tho and Vĩnh Long are about one and a half to two hours away, Cần Thơ is roughly three to four hours by road, and Châu Đốc, near the Cambodian border, takes around six to seven hours. Ho Chi Minh City is an ideal starting point for exploring the delta’s floating markets, canals, and riverside villages.
Alternatively, you can explore the Mekong Delta by river cruise. Multi-day itineraries can begin in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, travelling along the Mekong River and its tributaries, and concluding in Ho Chi Minh City. Some delta towns may require additional land transport to reach from the main river route.
