Why visit Mai Châu

Mai Châu is a scenic valley in Hòa Bình Province, about 140 km from Hanoi, surrounded by limestone mountains and dotted with traditional stilt houses. You can experience rural life first hand, from rice farming and weaving to exploring small villages such as Lac and Pom Coong.

The valley is quieter and less touristy than other areas of the country, making it ideal for cycling, trekking, and leisurely village walks. Seasonal rice fields, bright green in spring and golden before harvest, add to the valley’s photogenic charm and peaceful atmosphere.

Mai Châu is home to six ethnic groups: Thai, H’Mong, Muong, Zao/Dao, Tay, and Viet (Kinh). The Muong are skilled farmers and weavers. The Thai live in bamboo stilt houses and celebrate festivals with traditional dances and music. The H’Mong, mostly in higher mountain villages, grow hemp for indigo-dyed textiles and men play the bamboo Qeej during celebrations. Together, these communities create a rich cultural tapestry in the peaceful Mai Châu valley.
