Củ Chi Tunnels
Ho Chi Minh City lies close to the extraordinary Củ Chi Tunnels, an underground network originally dug in the late 1940s by the Việt Minh during their fight against French colonial forces.
During the Vietnam War, the tunnels were vastly expanded and used by the Viet Cong as hidden living quarters, supply routes, field hospitals and command posts. Stretching for more than 250 kilometres, the tunnels allowed guerrilla fighters to move unseen beneath the surface, their entrances cleverly concealed and ventilation systems ingeniously designed.
