Good to know

How do we get there?

The lodge is around 45 minutes from Sapa town. The closest major city is Hanoi, around 6 hours away.

Are children welcome?

Yes, children are welcome at Topas Ecolodge, though the experience is best suited to older children and teens who enjoy nature, adventure and a more tranquil pace.

There are no specific kids’ clubs or childcare facilities, but families will find plenty to enjoy together – from gentle treks and cycling through villages to swimming in the infinity pool and learning about local hill-tribe life.

Good to know:

  • The lodge’s remote, elevated setting means there are steep paths and limited barriers, so it may not be ideal for very young children or toddlers.

  • Extra beds and interconnecting bungalows are available on request.

  • The team is very accommodating and can tailor certain excursions to suit younger travellers.

Giving back

Topas Ecolodge is widely recognised for its pioneering approach to sustainable tourism, focusing on environmental protection, community upliftment and responsible travel.

Environmental stewardship

  • Rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling systems help reduce pressure on local water supplies.

  • A natural wetland system treats wastewater from the kitchen and laundry.

  • The lodge uses saltwater treatment in its pools instead of harsh chemicals.

  • Solar panels help power lighting across the property.

  • Glass is recycled by crushing bottles into sand for construction use, and leftover food is donated to local farmers.

Community impact

  • Over 90% of the lodge’s staff are from surrounding ethnic minority villages.

  • Staff receive regular training in language, hospitality and management, encouraging long-term careers.

  • Cultural encounters are designed to be respectful and beneficial to the local community.

Guest involvement

  • Guests can take part in eco-friendly initiatives such as “Trek ’n’ Trash” clean-ups.

  • An eco-token scheme rewards sustainable choices like skipping housekeeping or choosing low-impact excursions.

Topas Ecolodge is a genuine model for low-impact, high-quality travel in Southeast Asia.

How to spend your time here

• Trek to remote hill-tribe villages
Set off with a local guide on footpaths through rice terraces and forested hills to visit Red Dao and Black Hmong communities – learning about traditional life, crafts and customs along the way.

• Relax by the infinity pool
Soak in the panoramic mountain views from the lodge’s heated saltwater infinity pool – one of the most scenic swims in Vietnam.

• Cycle through the valleys
For the more active, mountain biking trails take you past quiet villages and dramatic landscapes, with the option of guided or self-guided routes.

• Indulge in a herbal spa treatment
Unwind with a traditional Red Dao herbal bath or massage in the spa, which overlooks the hills and uses locally sourced ingredients.

• Take it slow
Wake early to watch the sunrise from your balcony, read in the shade of the lodge’s gardens, or simply sit with a drink and watch the clouds drift through the valleys.
