Highlights

  • Spectacular Setting: Under Canvas North Yellowstone occupies 50 acres of ranchland in Montana’s Paradise Valley, with panoramic views of the Absaroka Mountains and more than a mile of frontage along the Yellowstone River.
  • Stylish Safari Tents: The safari-inspired tents combine a genuine connection to the outdoors with comfortable king-size beds, quality linens, wood-burning stoves and private decks. Most also have ensuite bathrooms with hot running water, showers and flushing toilets.
  • Excellent for Families: Dedicated family configurations include tents with adjoining children’s tents, while the spacious Yellowstone River Suite sleeps up to six people and has two private bathrooms.
  • Outdoor Adventures: Guests can go fly-fishing directly from the property or arrange river floats, white-water rafting, horse riding, guided hikes and wildlife-watching excursions through the camp’s Adventure Concierge.
  • Relaxed Camp Life: Days begin with coffee and complimentary yoga, while evenings bring live acoustic music, campfires and s’mores beneath Montana’s famously expansive night skies.
  • Riverside Dining: Embers serves seasonal, locally inspired breakfasts and dinners, with dishes ranging from fresh trout and salads to bison burgers and Western-style barbecue.

Good to know

How to get there

Under Canvas North Yellowstone is around 45 minutes by car from Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport and approximately 20 minutes south of Livingston. Yellowstone National Park’s North Entrance at Gardiner is roughly 45 minutes away.

The final approach includes an unpaved stretch of road. The smoothest route is via Highway 540, also known as East River Road, followed by Pine Creek Road. A hire car is strongly recommended, both for reaching the camp and for exploring Yellowstone if you plan to be independent.

Are children welcome?

Yes, children of all ages are welcome, and this is one of the better Under Canvas properties for families. Several accommodation categories have a private adjoining children’s tent containing two twin beds, while the Yellowstone River Suite can accommodate up to six guests.

Children’s activities and outdoor games are included in the camp programme. Parents should bear in mind that this remains an unfenced wilderness setting beside a river, and the children’s tents are separate from, although immediately adjacent to, the main tent.

Giving back

Under Canvas follows what it calls a “Mindful Approach”, designed to reduce the environmental impact of operating in sensitive natural landscapes.

The camps are developed with minimal permanent infrastructure and preserve large areas of open land. Water and energy consumption are reduced through pull-chain showers, low-flow toilets, self-closing taps, low-level lighting and towel-reuse programmes. Guest tents use rechargeable USB battery packs instead of conventional mains electricity.

The company also follows DarkSky principles to limit light pollution and protect the natural night-time environment. Ingredients are sourced locally where possible, while partnerships with organisations including The Nature Conservancy support wider land and water conservation work.

Why we love Under Canvas North Yellowstone

This is a wonderful way to experience Montana’s wilderness without giving up all the comforts of a good hotel. The setting beside the Yellowstone River is glorious, particularly at sunset, and there is something very special about returning from a day in the national park to live music, dinner outdoors and s’mores around the fire. We also love that the family tents give children a proper sense of adventure while keeping them reassuringly close to their parents.
