Why Visit Big Sky

Big Sky is one of the American West’s most compelling destinations for those seeking vast landscapes, curated adventure and refined comfort. Set beneath the striking Lone Mountain, it offers year-round access to the outdoors with very few crowds.

In winter, Big Sky becomes a snow-covered playground with over 5,800 acres of skiable terrain, world-class powder and no lift queues. Off the slopes, you can go dog sledding, snowshoeing, heli-skiing or simply relaxing in a luxury lodge with views of the mountains.

In summer, the focus shifts to hiking, fly-fishing, horseback riding and whitewater rafting, with private guides available to tailor every experience. The nearby Gallatin River is one of Montana’s finest for fly-fishing, and wildlife sightings, including elk, moose and eagles, are common throughout the valley.

Just an hour south lies the quieter western entrance to Yellowstone National Park. This makes Big Sky an ideal base for exploring geothermal wonders and tracking wildlife with a private guide, without the crowds of the southern gates.

Ski in the Sky

Big Sky is home to one of the largest ski areas in the United States, with over 5,800 acres of terrain and a vertical drop of 4,350 feet — making it larger than many well-known resorts, but with far fewer crowds.

Lewis + Clark

The Lewis and Clark Expedition travelled through the Big Sky area in 1805, following the Gallatin River west. Today, you can retrace parts of their route by foot, horseback or river, experiencing the same wild landscapes they once crossed, largely unchanged since those early days of American exploration.

Getting to Big Sky

Big Sky is easily reached via Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN), located about one hour’s drive north of the town. Bozeman has direct flights from major U.S. hubs including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas and Denver, making it the most convenient gateway to southern Montana.

From the airport, it’s a scenic drive through the Gallatin Canyon, following the river as the landscape shifts from open plains to dense pine forests and mountain peaks. We recommend a private transfer or a 4WD hire car, particularly in winter when roads can be snow-covered.

If arriving by private jet, Bozeman’s airport has full-service FBOs, and helicopter transfers to Big Sky can be arranged for faster access or scenic arrivals.

OUR FAVOURITE TIME TO VISIT

The winter months (November to March) offer some of the best skiing conditions with February generally being the best mix of great snow and longer days. Summer (June to August) is a wonderful time to hike and fish while Autumn (September and October) sees the landscape turn a golden brown. There really isn’t a bad time to go to Big Sky, there are just “different” times.
