Moonlight Basin is located in the mountains above Big Sky, Montana, roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes from Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN). Bozeman is the region’s main gateway, with direct flights from major U.S. cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas and Denver.
From the airport, it’s a scenic drive through the Gallatin Canyon, following the Gallatin River south before turning up into the high alpine terrain of Moonlight Basin. We recommend a private transfer or 4WD rental, particularly in winter months when roads may be snow-covered.
For spectacular views, helicopter transfers to Moonlight Basin can be arranged on request for a faster, more scenic arrival.
Yes, children are very welcome at Moonlight Basin.
The area is exceptionally family-friendly, with a wide range of year-round activities designed for younger travellers — from gentle ski slopes and private lessons in winter to horseback riding, hiking, fly-fishing and nature walks in summer. Many of the private residences and lodges cater specifically to families, with multi-bedroom layouts, games rooms and easy access to outdoor space.
For younger children, there are kid-friendly trails, snow play areas and local guides who are excellent at tailoring activities by age and interest. Teenagers can enjoy more adventurous options like whitewater rafting, mountain biking or wildlife tracking in nearby Yellowstone.
We can also arrange a private naturalist or wrangler to lead a day of family adventure — from animal tracking to fire-building and star-gazing, it’s the sort of experience children remember long after the journey ends.
Moonlight Basin is built around a strong ethos of conservation and environmental stewardship, with a focus on preserving the natural landscape of Montana’s Spanish Peaks region. Its sustainability efforts are closely tied to its partnership with the Spanish Peaks Community Foundation and ongoing work with local conservation groups.
Low-impact development: Homes, lodges and facilities are designed to blend into the alpine environment, with careful attention to preserving forest, wildlife corridors and viewsheds.
Land preservation: A significant portion of land within Moonlight Basin remains undeveloped, ensuring open space and habitats for elk, moose, eagles and other native species.
Green building practices: New developments follow environmentally conscious construction methods, often incorporating energy-efficient systems, reclaimed materials and responsible water use.
Wildlife protection: Land management practices prioritise native species, including seasonal protections during migration or breeding periods. The area regularly partners with conservation experts to monitor and protect local biodiversity.
Community and education: The resort supports environmental education, trail maintenance, and programmes that promote outdoor ethics among guests and homeowners.
In summer, Moonlight Basin is all wildflower meadows, hiking trails, fly-fishing and golf under wide blue skies. Winter transforms it into a peaceful, snow-covered retreat with ski-in, ski-out access, snowshoeing and roaring fires. Both seasons offer luxury, privacy and dramatic views, but the pace shifts; alpine adventure in summer, cosy mountain stillness in winter.
While there are rooms and suites in the main hotel, the cabins here are really special. Tucked away among the trees with private decks and fire pits, these are fabulous hideaways to escape to at the end of a day on the slopes skiing or hiking.
