Why Visit San Diego

San Diego is a city that makes the most of its coastal setting and enviable climate. With more than 250 days of sunshine a year, it’s a place where life is lived outdoors – on golden beaches, in lush parks and along scenic waterfronts. Surfers carve through Pacific waves at Pacific Beach, families gather on the soft sands of La Jolla Shores, and kayakers paddle through sea caves to spot seals basking on the rocks.

Beyond the ocean, San Diego has cultural depth. Balboa Park is its beating heart – a 1,200-acre expanse of gardens, Spanish Colonial Revival architecture and world-class museums. History lovers can explore the USS Midway, a retired aircraft carrier that now tells the story of America’s naval past, while Old Town brings San Diego’s Mexican heritage to life with adobe buildings, markets and music.

Food and neighbourhoods play a big part in the city’s character. Little Italy hums with trattorias and farmers’ markets, while the Gaslamp Quarter is alive with restaurants, bars and live music. Add in its proximity to Baja California, and San Diego becomes more than a beach city – it is a cultural crossroads, rich in history yet relaxed in pace, with endless ways to explore.

The origins of California

San Diego is the birthplace of California. In 1769, Spanish missionaries and soldiers founded the state’s first mission and presidio here – a legacy still visible in Old Town and Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá.

Hidden past

Beneath San Diego’s Old Town lies an early cemetery. Many 19th-century graves were paved over as roads expanded. Brass medallions in the tarmac along San Diego Avenue discreetly mark these sites, reminders of settlers resting beneath the bustling street.
