The main international airport in Uganda is Entebbe International Airport (EBB). From here, you can take a one hour domestic flight to the closest airstrip, which is just over an hours drive from Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge.
Children of all ages are very welcome at Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge, however children under the age of 15 are not permitted to track the gorillas, and childcare facilities are not available at the lodge.
Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge was created to protect the forest and support the people who live beside it. Through the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust, the lodge funds long-term community and conservation projects in Buhoma. Many staff are from the surrounding villages and receive ongoing training, creating stable employment in an area where opportunities are limited.
The Bwindi Bar is one of its most visible community projects. This lively spot in the village trains disadvantaged young people in hospitality skills, from service to cookery. Guests who stop by for a drink after gorilla trekking help fund training and create real career paths for local youth.
The tea project is another practical initiative. Tea is grown on the hills around the lodge as a buffer crop, as wildlife does not eat it. This helps reduce human–wildlife conflict along the forest boundary. The project provides jobs for local pickers and includes a small processing site where guests can see how black, green and white teas are made.
Environmental care runs through daily operations. The lodge supports reforestation by planting indigenous trees to restore degraded land near Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. It also works to reduce waste and source produce locally where possible. Each stay contributes to protecting habitat for endangered mountain gorillas and the wider ecosystem they depend on.
Mountain Gorillas: Bwindi is world-famous for its mountain gorillas, offering visitors the chance to see these gentle giants in their natural habitat.
Primates: The forest is home to eleven species of primates, including red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and baboons.
Rare Mammals: Shy forest elephants and elusive giant forest hogs roam the dense forest, while forest duiker and bushbuck antelopes can also be spotted.
Birds and Butterflies: Bwindi boasts a rich diversity of over 200 butterfly species and numerous bird species, making it a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts.
Other Wildlife: Visitors may also encounter warthogs, civets, and other fascinating forest creatures.
Not only is the lodge gorgeous, looking out over the amazing Bwindi Impenetrable Forest where you can encounter endangered mountain gorillas, but a real highlight is its dedication to the local community. Staying here allows you to directly support projects such as the Bwindi Bar training programme, the tea project, and reforestation efforts.
