Good to know

How to get there

Lemala Wildwaters Lodge is located on a private island in the Nile, around 25km downstream from Jinja in eastern Uganda.

Entebbe International Airport is Uganda’s main international gateway; from here, the drive takes around four to five hours depending on traffic. From Kampala, the journey takes approximately three to four hours.

Once you reach the river crossing point, there is a short boat journey across the Nile to the island itself. Due to the nature of the river crossing, guests must arrive before 5.30pm in order to reach the lodge safely.

Helicopter arrivals can also be arranged, as the island has its own helipad.

Are children welcome?

Children aged 16 and above are welcome at Lemala Wildwaters Lodge. However, parents should be aware that the lodge is located on a private island surrounded by grade five rapids. For safety reasons, children must remain under adult supervision at all times and are not permitted to roam freely around the island unaccompanied.

Giving back

Lemala Wildwaters Lodge is part of the wider Lemala Camps & Lodges group, which supports local communities and conservation through a range of long-term initiatives.

The group employs staff from nearby communities and offers training and internship opportunities for young people entering the hospitality industry. It also supports women’s empowerment projects and provides platforms for local artisans to share and sell their crafts.

In Uganda, community programmes include support for schoolchildren who travel long distances, along with guided community walks near Kalagala Island that help generate income for local farmers, weavers and craftspeople.

Environmental work focuses on reducing impact across all properties. Lemala operates with solar power, has removed single-use plastic water bottles, and uses filtered drinking water systems. Plastic waste is recycled into useful items for schools, and biodegradable alternatives have replaced several single-use products.

The group also contributes to wider conservation initiatives across East Africa, including anti-snaring programmes that help protect wildlife in key protected areas.
