If the Eastern Galápagos is where the islands first won their reputation, the Western Galápagos is where nature feels at its most untamed. Encompassing Isabela, Fernandina, Santiago and Rábida, this is the youngest part of the archipelago, where vast shield volcanoes continue to shape the landscape and wildlife has evolved in extraordinary isolation.
Towering lava cliffs, smoking volcanoes and untouched black lava fields create a dramatic backdrop for some of the richest wildlife encounters in the Galápagos. This is one of the few places on Earth where you can watch Galápagos penguins dart through tropical waters, observe flightless cormorants drying their stunted wings and encounter marine iguanas gathered in their thousands along the shoreline.
Beneath the surface, nutrient-rich currents support exceptional marine life. Sea turtles, reef sharks, eagle rays and playful sea lions are common companions while snorkelling, while dolphins and whales are regular seasonal visitors offshore.
Reaching the Western Galápagos requires a longer expedition than the eastern islands, but those who make the journey are rewarded with quieter visitor sites, spectacular volcanic scenery and some of the archipelago’s most remarkable endemic wildlife. For many experienced travellers, this is the Galápagos at its very best.

Fernandina has never been successfully colonised by humans. Its isolation and frequent volcanic eruptions have protected it from many of the introduced species that affected other Galápagos islands, making it one of the world’s most pristine island ecosystems.
Galápagos penguins survive on the Equator because of cold ocean currents. The nutrient-rich Cromwell Current cools the western islands sufficiently for the world’s rarest penguin to thrive in a tropical climate.
Nothing but the best. Browse our handpicked, tried-and-tested luxury lodges and luxury boats.
The Western Galápagos cannot realistically be explored on a day trip. Most visitors experience the region aboard expedition cruises of at least five to eight nights, departing from either Baltra or San Cristóbal.
Longer itineraries spend several days exploring the western islands, allowing access to remote visitor sites such as Fernandina, Tagus Cove, Elizabeth Bay, Punta Vicente Roca and Urbina Bay.
Land-based visitors can stay on Isabela Island; reaching the archipelago’s spectacular western coastline is only possible by expedition vessel.
These species and subspecies occur naturally only in the Western Islands.
The Western Galápagos is at its finest from June to October, when the nutrient-rich Cromwell Current transforms the surrounding waters into one of the richest marine ecosystems in the Pacific. This is the best time to see Galápagos penguins, flightless cormorants and large concentrations of marine life, while cooler temperatures make hiking across the volcanic landscapes particularly enjoyable.
