Giving back

As a member of The Long Run, Pikaia Lodge in the Galápagos Islands has a strong commitment to sustainability, focusing on several key areas:

  1. Environmental Restoration: The lodge undertook an extensive reforestation project, planting over 10,000 endemic trees to restore the native ecosystem. This effort has helped the return of native wildlife, including giant tortoises and various bird species.
  2. Energy Efficiency: Pikaia Lodge uses solar panels and a wind turbine to generate much of its energy, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The lodge’s design maximises natural cooling and ventilation, further conserving energy.
  3. Water Conservation: The roofs are designed to collect rainwater, which is treated and purified for use throughout the hotel. This practice reduces the need for plastic bottles and conserves water in a region where it is a precious resource.
  4. Waste Management: The lodge employs a comprehensive waste management system, including composting organic waste and recycling plastics, glass, paper, and cardboard. It also uses a three-stage aerobic wastewater treatment plant to prevent pollution.
  5. Sustainable Building Materials: The lodge was constructed using eco-friendly materials such as local Galápagos lava stone, Peruvian travertine, and sustainable bamboo. These materials were chosen to minimise the environmental impact of construction.
  6. Community Support: Pikaia Lodge has created over 60 jobs for local residents and supports local farmers and fishermen by sourcing food locally. The lodge also involves guests in restoration efforts by allowing them to plant trees.
  7. Carbon Neutrality: Pikaia Lodge strives to be carbon neutral, with efforts extending to both its operations and its dining, which emphasises locally sourced ingredients to reduce the carbon footprint.

Why we love Pikaia Lodge

So many people overlook the option of exploring the Galápagos by land, but Pikaia just gets it exactly right with a combination of both land and sea based adventures. For anyone who doesn’t want to be on a boat for days at a time, Pikaia has to be a great choice.
