Giving back

Namiri Plains Camp, has long been established a leader in sustainability and conservation. The camp is powered entirely by solar energy, minimizing its carbon footprint. In 2019, it underwent a complete rebuild, transforming into a contemporary, luxury safari camp that harmoniously blends with its environment. The camp’s design incorporates natural materials and features stone walls made from solidified volcanic ash, providing natural insulation to maintain comfortable temperatures. Additionally, Namiri Plains is situated in a remote area of the eastern Serengeti, previously closed for 20 years to allow cheetah populations to recover, highlighting its dedication to wildlife conservation.

What wildlife can you expect to see?

  • Cheetahs: Namiri Plains is one of the best places in Africa to see cheetahs, thanks to decades of conservation efforts that have allowed their population to thrive.

  • Lions: Large prides of lions roam the area, frequently seen hunting in the open plains. The density of lions here is among the highest in the Serengeti.

  • Leopards: These elusive cats are often spotted around rocky outcrops (kopjes), using the landscape for cover as they hunt.

  • Hyenas: Both spotted and striped hyenas are common, often seen scavenging or challenging other predators for a kill.

  • Great Migration (November to June): Depending on the time of year, vast herds of wildebeest and zebras pass through, attracting intense predator activity. From November to March, calving season brings dramatic predator-prey interactions, while from April to June, migrating herds move northward through the Serengeti.

  • Elephants: Small herds of elephants roam the woodlands and seasonal riverbeds, providing incredible encounters.

  • Giraffes and plains game: Expect to see giraffes, zebras, topi, Thomson’s gazelles, and hartebeest, as well as warthogs grazing across the open landscapes.

  • Birdlife: Over 500 bird species, including secretary birds, lilac-breasted rollers, ostriches, and vultures, make this an excellent location for birdwatching.

Why we love Namiri Plains Camp

This area of the park was closed to visitors for 20 years to allow the cheetah population to recover, making it a true stronghold for these beautiful predators.
