Good to know

How to get there

Uga Chena Huts is located just outside Yala National Park on Sri Lanka’s southeastern coast. The drive from Colombo takes approximately seven hours. For a faster journey, we recommend flying to Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, which is a two hour drive from the lodge. Charter flights and helicopter transfers can also be arranged for guests seeking a more direct route.

Are children welcome?

Yes, children of all ages are welcome at Uga Chena Huts. While the lodge is popular with couples, families are also well catered for, and private villas ensure both comfort and privacy.

Giving back

Uga Chena Huts is part of the Uga Escapes group, which is deeply committed to sustainability and community involvement. The property uses solar energy for hot water and lighting, manages waste responsibly, and eliminates single-use plastics where possible. It supports local communities through employment, education initiatives, and sourcing produce and materials locally. The lodge also contributes to conservation efforts in Yala, including leopard monitoring and habitat preservation projects in collaboration with local wildlife authorities.

What wildlife can you expect to see?

Yala National Park is renowned for having one of the highest densities of leopards in the world, offering a strong chance of sightings during guided game drives. Elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, spotted deer, and wild boar are also regularly seen. Birdlife is particularly rich, with over 200 recorded species, including painted storks, peacocks, eagles, and bee-eaters. The park’s varied landscapes — from scrub jungle and lagoons to coastal plains — create diverse habitats that support this remarkable concentration of wildlife.

Why we love Uga Chena Huts

It’s the combination of wild coastline, dense jungle and extraordinary wildlife that makes this place so special — but what struck me most was waking up to birdsong and the sound of the ocean, knowing that leopards might be just a few kilometres away.
