Giving back

Leopard Trails is dedicated to conservation and sustainable tourism, ensuring that its presence in Wilpattu National Park benefits both the environment and local communities. The camp operates with minimal impact, using solar power, biodegradable toiletries, and a strict waste management system to protect the park’s delicate ecosystem. Water conservation is a key focus, with guests encouraged to reuse towels and linens to reduce unnecessary consumption.

Beyond environmental efforts, Leopard Trails actively contributes to wildlife conservation. The camp supports research initiatives focused on Wilpattu’s leopard population, working with scientists and conservationists to monitor these elusive big cats. Anti-poaching initiatives are also backed by the camp, ensuring the safety of the park’s wildlife. Additionally, Leopard Trails engages with local communities by providing employment opportunities, hiring and training local staff in hospitality and guiding. Many of the camp’s ingredients and supplies are sourced from nearby villages, promoting economic growth in the region. The camp also supports education initiatives, funding conservation awareness programmes in schools to encourage a new generation of wildlife stewards.

Wildlife you are likely to see

Wilpattu National Park is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to spot the elusive Sri Lankan leopard, often seen moving through the park’s dense forests and open grasslands. Sri Lankan elephants are frequently sighted, particularly near water sources, while the rare Sri Lankan sloth bear emerges during fruiting season in search of palu berries. Spotted deer and water buffalo are common, grazing in open areas and cooling off in the park’s many lakes. Mugger crocodiles can be seen basking along the water’s edge, and the park is a haven for birdlife, with species such as painted storks, eagles, Sri Lankan junglefowl, and spoonbills thriving around Wilpattu’s natural lakes.
