Willis Okech

Willis Okech Oyugi is a Kenyan safari guide, environmental historian and naturalist whose safaris combine wildlife expertise with a deep understanding of Africa’s landscapes and history. Often known simply as Professor ‘O’, he brings an academic perspective to guiding, exploring the connections between wildlife, conservation and the human stories that shape the continent’s national parks and ecosystems.

Born in Kenya, Willis developed a passion for nature early in life. Over time, this interest expanded into academic research focused on African environmental history and the complex relationship between people and wildlife. He holds a PhD in History from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he also completed his MA, following earlier degrees in History and Environmental Studies from Miami University in Ohio.

Alongside his academic career, Willis has guided extensively across East Africa, specialising in birding, wildlife, photography and cultural journeys. His safaris combine detailed natural history with thoughtful discussions about conservation and the historical forces that have shaped modern landscapes.

Willis has also played a significant role in the guiding profession in Kenya. A founding member of the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association, he currently chairs its Examination Committee and contributes to the training and certification of future guides.

Based between Kenya and the United States, Willis guides primarily in Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda. He speaks English.
