Whales, sharks, dolphin and gannets can all be seen hunting these dense fish balls. For a really close up experience you can put on a wetsuit and set of fins and snorkel alongside!

How to get there

The easiest way to get to Gwe Gwe is to fly from Durban along the coast. With stunning views this journey takes around 1.5 hours.

Perhaps the most exciting way is to drive south to Port Edward, which takes around 2 hours. From here you can board a rib and head out to sea for the last section. From May to August there will be the chance of whale encounters along the way as well as dolphins. This is a fantastic way to take in the Wild Coast and learn about the history of this region from the sea. If conditions are good and you are up for an adventure you may even be able to swim to shore, hike up a waterfall and walk the last mile to the lodge. If not then the boat will pull up on the beach at the lodge.

The lodge offers a safe and tranquil environment for children to explore nature and enjoy a relaxing coastal experience. Families can participate in activities such as exploring the beaches, hiking, and wildlife spotting in the Mkambati Nature Reserve.
