Highlights

  • A new lodge with heritage: The brainchild of legendary lodge developer Colin Bell, the man behind the first Safari lodges in Botswana, Gwe Gwe may be new but it comes with decades of experience behind it.
  • Exclusive Location: Set within the untouched Mkambati Nature Reserve on South Africa’s Eastern Cape, GweGwe Beach Lodge offers unparalleled seclusion along the pristine Wild Coast. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs, open grasslands, and secluded beaches, it’s a haven for those seeking tranquillity and natural beauty.
  • Luxury Accommodations: The lodge’s exclusive rooms blend comfort with nature, featuring private decks overlooking the Indian Ocean, six-metre pools, and indoor-outdoor showers. Thoughtful design ensures guests are immersed in the serene coastal surroundings without compromising on luxury.
  • Diverse Activities: From hiking to hidden waterfalls and dramatic cliff-top views to snorkelling and kayaking in crystal-clear waters, the lodge offers an array of activities. Guests can also explore the reserve on guided 4×4 drives or enjoy leisurely stand-up paddleboarding along untouched shores.
  • Wildlife Encounters: GweGwe offers a unique juxtaposition of ecosystems, where guests can spot zebras and antelopes grazing on the grasslands while watching dolphins and whales breaching in the ocean.
  • Cultural Experiences: Deeply rooted in the region, the lodge celebrates Pondo heritage with opportunities to engage with local communities, learn about traditional practices, and enjoy authentic cultural storytelling.
  • Sustainability and Conservation: The lodge champions eco-tourism by integrating sustainable practices and supporting the conservation of Mkambati’s unique biodiversity, ensuring minimal impact on its fragile ecosystems.
  • The Sardine Run: Every year from June to July vast shoals of sardines make their way along this stretch of coastline, closely followed by some of the oceans most incredible predators. Whales, sharks, dolphin and gannets can all be seen hunting these dense fish balls. For a really close up experience you can put on a wetsuit and set of fins and snorkel alongside!

Good to know

How to get there

The easiest way to get to Gwe Gwe is to fly from Durban along the coast. With stunning views this journey takes around 1.5 hours.

Perhaps the most exciting way is to drive south to Port Edward, which takes around 2 hours. From here you can board a rib and head out to sea for the last section. From May to August there will be the chance of whale encounters along the way as well as dolphins. This is a fantastic way to take in the Wild Coast and learn about the history of this region from the sea. If conditions are good and you are up for an adventure you may even be able to swim to shore, hike up a waterfall and walk the last mile to the lodge. If not then the boat will pull up on the beach at the lodge.

Are children welcome?

Yes, children are welcome at Gwe Gwe Beach Lodge, making it a great choice for families. The lodge offers a safe and tranquil environment for children to explore nature and enjoy a relaxing coastal experience. Families can participate in activities such as exploring the beaches, hiking, and wildlife spotting in the Mkambati Nature Reserve. For a family looking for a coastal adventure there can be fewer places better. There are fantastic facilities and wonderful guides ready to design days to suit you perfectly.

Why we love Gwe Gwe Beach Lodge

I was lucky enough to be one of the very first guests at Gwe Gwe and knew instantly that it was going to be something very special. The location is nothing short of spectacular isolation and the opportunities to explore the coast with incredible guides, it’s on my wish list for the next family holiday.
