The history of Fugitive’s Drift

Fugitive’s Drift is a site of profound historical significance, located in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. The area is most renowned for its association with the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, particularly the battles of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. These battles are among the most famous in British military history, marking dramatic clashes between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom.

The Battle of Isandlwana, fought on 22 January 1879, was a devastating defeat for the British, with over 1,300 troops killed. Later that day, the Battle of Rorke’s Drift saw a small British garrison of around 150 men successfully defend their position against a sustained assault by 4,000 Zulu warriors. This remarkable defence earned eleven Victoria Crosses, the highest number ever awarded for a single engagement.

Fugitive’s Drift itself derives its name from the dramatic flight of British survivors from Isandlwana across the Buffalo River to the safety of Rorke’s Drift. The area has since become a poignant reminder of these historic events. Today, Fugitive’s Drift Lodge and Guest House, established by the Rattray family, provide not only luxurious accommodation but also educational tours that vividly recount the heroism and tragedies of the Anglo-Zulu War.
