Sustainable travel

Belmond’s sustainability philosophy empowers each local team to develop initiatives that support the environment and adjacent communities, recognising the specific cultural and natural context of each destination. This means local staff and partners are encouraged to protect heritage, biodiversity and human heritage through tailored actions where the experience operates.

The Eastern and Oriental Express is working with the wildlife organisation Save Wild Tigers to protect the critically endangered Malayan Tiger, which still roams freely in remote areas of Malaysia.

Travelling by train is also more sustainable than driving or flying, as it reduces carbon emission by over six times that of a short flight.

Belmond has also partnered with EarthCheck, a leading scientific benchmarking and certification body for the travel and tourism industry. This framework helps measure and improve environmental performance across energy, water, waste management and responsible procurement. The goal is to track progress and continually reduce environmental impact across its global operations.

Giving back

The company specifically aims to protect and progress cultural heritage — such as traditional crafts, local arts and community traditions and natural heritage, by promoting sustainable food production and reducing resource consumption in its operations.

Belmond’s sustainability strategy includes being allies to the people and communities where it operates, helping ensure that tourism opens opportunities for cultural preservation, economic participation and local empowerment.
