Volcanoes National Park is a premier destination for tracking endangered mountain gorillas, it is one of the few places in the world where you can see these gentle giants in their natural habitat. Trekking through the lush, mist-covered forests to observe gorillas is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is both physically engaging and emotionally rewarding.
You can also go golden monkey trekking. The golden monkeys inhabit the bamboo forests at the base of the volcanoes, where they have grown accustomed to the presence of researchers and small groups of visitors. Agile and full of character, these rare primates are known for their playful behaviour and remarkable agility, often seen leaping from tree to tree in bursts of energy that are a joy to watch.
The park is named for its chain of eight volcanoes, part of the Virunga Mountains, and some of these volcanoes are still active, creating dramatic landscapes that rise above misty forests and crater lakes.
Mountain gorillas are endangered – there are an estimated 1,063 in the wild according to the latest census results
We share around 98% of our DNA with gorillas, This means that exposure to human illnesses, even a cold, can have potentially detrimental impacts on gorillas as they are so genetically similar to us, but they haven’t developed the necessary immunities.

Nothing but the best. Browse our handpicked, tried-and-tested luxury hotels.
Kigali International Airport (KGL) is Rwanda’s main international gateway and the closest airport to Volcanoes National Park.
The journey to the park takes around three to three and a half hours, depending on where you are staying.
Some hotels and lodges in Volcanoes National Park cater well for families, offering childcare and kids’ clubs.
It is important to note that the minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15. This rule ensures safety and protects the gorillas. The trek can take up to six hours and is often steep, muddy and strenuous. Visitors must remain calm and avoid sudden movements or loud noises in the gorillas’ presence.
Beyond gorilla trekking, Rwanda offers a range of safari experiences that complement Volcanoes National Park. Akagera National Park provides classic savannah game-viewing with elephants, lions, buffalo and hippos. Boat safaris on Lake Ihema reveal hippos, crocodiles and abundant waterbirds. Birdwatchers can explore the forests of Volcanoes and Nyungwe to spot rare Albertine Rift endemics.
Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe offers another primate encounter, with guided hikes through ancient rainforest. Nature trails in both parks reveal colobus monkeys, duikers and striking plant life. For the adventurous, cross-border gorilla safaris in Uganda’s Mgahinga or the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga National Park add an extra dimension to a wildlife-focused itinerary.
The best time to visit Volcanoes National Park is during Rwanda’s dry seasons. The first runs from mid-December to early February and the second from June to September. Trails are easier to navigate, and gorilla trekking is more comfortable in drier conditions.
