Good to know

How to get there

Singita Kwitonda can be reached from Kigali International Airport with your private driver. The journey can take up to four hours and is wonderfully scenic, although it is quite winding and hilly.

Alternatively, a private helicopter can be arranged to pick you up from Kigali International Airport and take you to Singita Kwitonda. The helicopter journey takes approximately 30 minutes.

Are children welcome?

Children of all ages are warmly welcomed at Singita Kwitonda Lodge, and the magnificent wildlife is an unforgettable experience for all ages.

It is important to note that the minimum age requirement for the gorilla trekking is 15 years old, but the lodge offers child minding services and a wide array of activities to keep younger children entertained whilst other members of the family go on a gorilla trek.

Children over the age of 12 can trek to see golden monkeys which is a real highlight, whilst younger children can go birding, cycling and swimming. There are also cooking interactions, board games, stargazing and a variety of arts and crafts.

Giving back

Volcanoes National Park is one of Africa’s oldest protected areas and forms part of the Virunga Massif, a UNESCO-recognised landscape known for its rare biodiversity. Home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, the park supports an exceptional range of wildlife, including hundreds of bird, mammal, reptile and amphibian species. Despite its importance, decades of pressure once reduced the park’s size and threatened its wildlife.

In response, the Rwandan Government, conservation partners and Singita have supported a major expansion of the park, increasing its footprint by around 23 per cent. This has helped restore vital habitat, reduce infant gorilla mortality and improve long-term viability for wildlife populations. Singita’s properties sit within the park’s formal buffer zone, where large-scale reforestation and land rehabilitation are helping reconnect fragmented habitats.

Conservation work continues on the ground through long-term partnerships with organisations such as the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Indigenous tree planting, wildlife monitoring and scientific research are restoring forest cover and encouraging the return of species including forest buffalo, elephant and serval. Alongside this, community projects and training programmes ensure conservation delivers lasting benefits for the people living around the park.

What wildlife can you expect to see?

Mountain Gorillas: For most guests, a gorilla trek is at the top of their list when they visit Rwanda. A stay at Singita Kwitonda Lodge allows them the privilege to encounter one of Africa’s most majestic and gentle creatures in the wild, while surrounded by the beauty of their pristine natural habitat.

Golden Monkeys: Guests can also take guided treks to see golden monkeys in the park’s bamboo forests. These playful, colourful primates are endemic to the region and offer a lively, memorable wildlife experience.

Birdlife: Volcanoes National Park supports over 200 bird species, including many Albertine Rift endemics. Highlights include the Ruwenzori double-collared sunbird, Ruwenzori turaco, Archer’s ground robin and the red-faced woodland warbler, making the area a rewarding destination for birdwatchers of all levels.
