Why visit Khunjerab National Park

Khunjerab National Park offers a rare glimpse into one of the world’s most remote mountain landscapes. Vast, wild, and largely untouched, it sits high on the border where Pakistan meets China, surrounded by the peaks of the Karakoram.

The park is known as an important refuge for the elusive snow leopard. These mountains form part of one of the species’ last strongholds, where steep terrain and rich prey support its survival. Sightings are never certain, but tracking signs and learning about conservation efforts make the experience deeply rewarding.

Life here follows nature’s rhythm. Ibex and blue sheep move across the slopes, while golden eagles circle overhead. Changing light and weather constantly reshape the landscape, creating a strong sense of wilderness and scale.

A visit to Khunjerab is also about understanding conservation. Time with local rangers and communities reveals how people work to protect snow leopards while supporting life in one of the world’s highest inhabited regions.

Extreme Adaptations

Snow leopards here can survive without drinking water for days, getting moisture from the prey they eat.

Home to the Marco Polo Sheep

Named after the famous explorer, these sheep have some of the longest spiralling horns in the animal kingdom.

OUR FAVOURITE TIME TO VISIT FOR SNOW LEOPARDS

A visit to Khunjerab National Park for snow leopards is between January and March, when winter snow drives these elusive cats down to lower slopes in search of prey. The fresh snow makes tracks and signs easier to follow, and guided excursions with local rangers offer the best chance to observe footprints, scrape marks, and other clues of their presence.

While sightings are never guaranteed, this period provides the most reliable conditions for tracking, allowing visitors to experience the park’s dramatic alpine landscapes, watch ibex and blue sheep in action, while gaining a deeper understanding of snow leopard behaviour and conservation efforts.
