Good to know

How do we get there?

Guests can arrive at Cabot Lodge with a driver from Queenstown Airport or Invercargill Airport, and the journey takes approximately two hours from both.

A private helicopter can also be arranged to take guests from Queenstown Airport. The flight is 25 minutes.

Are children welcome?

Cabot Lodge welcomes children over the age of 11.

An exception can be made when the lodge is booked out exclusively, and children aged 10 and under are welcome, however the lodge does not have the facilities, like high chairs and cot, to cater for very young children.

Giving back

The family-run nature of Cabot Lodge ensures it is deeply connected to the natural environment and the local community. The owners are passionate about caring for the land they inhabit.

The property operates free from single-use plastics. All guest amenities are refillable, biodegradable, and cruelty-free, including handcrafted soaps and bath salts made on-site from locally sourced ingredients. Food waste is composted or repurposed as feed for the resident animals, creating a closed-loop system.

Cabot Lodge also reduces its environmental footprint through solar power, LED lighting, and careful greywater-friendly practices. Beyond the property, the lodge supports local conservation through tree planting, wetland restoration, and partnerships with organizations like Environment Southland.

Guests are encouraged to get involved. Visitors can join farm and beehive tours to learn about land stewardship and the vital role of bees. Sometimes, guests are invited to meet conservation specialists during the nightly cocktail hour, learning first-hand about the region’s preservation efforts.

What's nearby?

Cabot Lodge is set on 2,000 acres of farmland with a variety of walking trails for guests to enjoy. Guests can hike to the farm’s highest peak for spectacular views or wander down to the jetty on the Waiau River for fishing or a picnic.

Farm and beekeeping tours are available for those interested in learning more about life on the property. Dog lovers can enjoy a 40-minute sheepdog demonstration featuring New Zealand Huntaways and Heading Dogs, all bred and trained on-site.

Guests can also book yoga sessions and massage treatments at the new spa sanctuary overlooking one of the farm’s small lakes, or unwind in the outdoor hot tub with panoramic mountain views.

Fiordland National Park is the largest in New Zealand and is known as the “walking capital of the world.” It is home to four of New Zealand’s ten Great Walks — the Milford, Routeburn, Hump Ridge, and Kepler tracks. Fiordland is also home to amazing wildlife, including Bottlenose dolphins, New Zealand fur seals, Fiordland crested penguins, and the cheeky mountain parrot, the Kea.

Lake Manapouri, visible from every room at Cabot Lodge, serves as the gateway to Doubtful Sound. Guests can take a boat across the lake and enjoy the awe-inspiring mountains, waterfalls, and wildlife.

Milford Sound is also easy to reach with a driver. The spectacular Milford Road is only 20 minutes from Cabot Lodge, and tours can be planned to escape the crowds.

In Milford and Doubtful Sounds, guests can go sea kayaking, paddling through inky blue waters, under waterfalls, and alongside dolphins. Kayaking is also available on Lake Te Anau and Lake Manapouri. The eastern side of Lake Manapouri is a fantastic place to explore, with over 30 small islands, hidden coves, waterfalls, and sandy shores — all reachable in one day.

One of the best ways to experience Fiordland’s vast landscape is from above. Private helicopters can be arranged to take guests soaring over the fiords, lakes, and waterfalls, and landing on snow-capped mountains that overlook the mirror-like lakes. Cabot Lodge also has one of the only private seaplane landings in the country.

Why we love Cabot Lodge

We love the intimate feel of this family run lodge, the farm itself is idyllic! Not only are there spectacular views and beautiful walks on the property. I loved seeing all of the vegetables growing in the garden, and learning about the bees!
