Why visit Windhoek

Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, offers a gentle and engaging introduction to the country’s unique blend of cultures, landscapes and pace. While many visitors pass through quickly, it’s worth pausing here, either at the start or end of your journey, to explore its quieter charms.

Set among rolling hills and savannah, Windhoek feels more like a laid-back regional town than a bustling city. German colonial architecture sits alongside modern African design, with highlights including the historic Christuskirche, the old railway station and the Independence Memorial Museum.

It’s also the perfect place to adjust to the rhythm of Namibia. You can browse local craft markets, enjoy a leisurely lunch at a garden café or sample Namibia’s excellent home-grown wines and craft beers. For those interested in contemporary culture, there are galleries, artisan shops and increasingly good dining options.

Windhoek is also home to some exceptional boutique hotels and lodges on its outskirts, peaceful places with views over the bush, where you can unwind before heading into the wild. Whether you’re beginning a desert adventure or returning from days on safari, Windhoek offers a moment of stillness, comfort and soft cultural immersion that’s not to be overlooked.

What's in a name?

Windhoek’s name comes from the Afrikaans for ‘windy corner’, but locals say it was likely a mishearing of Winterhoek, a mountain in South Africa where early settlers came from.

Early days

Before colonial rule, Windhoek was valued by the Nama and Herero for its natural springs. In the mid-1800s, Nama leader Jonker Afrikaner established one of the region’s earliest organised settlements, complete with a church and trading post.

OUR FAVOURITE TIME TO VISIT

September sees the city enjoying warm, dry days and cool, comfortable evenings, perfect for exploring on foot or relaxing on a terrace with a glass of Namibian wine. With little to no rainfall, the skies are reliably clear, making it ideal for scenic flights or beginning a fly-in safari. The surrounding bush is dry, drawing wildlife closer to waterholes in nearby reserves, and the landscape takes on that classic Namibian golden hue.
