Highlights

  • Extraordinary Kunene River setting – The camp is perched just above the Kunene River, which marks the border with Angola. This permanent water source brings life to an otherwise stark, sun-baked landscape. Watching crocodiles drift past, listening to birdsong and hearing the river flowing at night creates a powerful sense of place.

  • Remote wilderness experience – Reached only by light aircraft and a 4WD transfer, Serra Cafema is one of the most isolated camps in Southern Africa. Here, you’re hundreds of kilometres from the nearest town, surrounded by dunes, mountains and silence. It’s the kind of place that strips things back and reminds you how little you need.

  • Elegant, spacious tented suites – The thatch, wood and canvas structures are open, airy and beautifully appointed, with large beds, comfortable lounge areas and private decks overlooking the river. Each suite feels entirely secluded, offering quiet, uninterrupted time to read, rest or simply take in the ever-changing desert light.

  • Cultural connection with the Himba – Guests have the rare opportunity to visit local Himba communities, who live in the Marienfluss Conservancy and move seasonally with their livestock. These visits are arranged with deep respect and longstanding relationships, offering a genuine insight into one of Africa’s last semi-nomadic cultures.

  • Diverse desert activities – The terrain here is unlike anywhere else; endless sand dunes, rocky escarpments and sweeping valleys. You can explore on quadbikes, take boat trips along the river when water levels allow, walk with a guide through the desert or simply enjoy a slow, interpretive game drive in the cool morning light.

  • Scenic main areas and pool – The heart of camp is a relaxed, open-plan space with lounge, bar and dining areas all facing the river. There’s also a small shaded pool for cooling off during the heat of the day, and plenty of quiet corners to retreat with a book or a drink.

Good to know

How do we get there?

Serra Cafema is located in far north-west Namibia, on the banks of the Kunene River.

  • By air – The easiest and most practical way to reach camp is by light aircraft, landing at Hartmann Valley airstrip followed by a scenic drive to camp.

  • By road – Overland access is technically possible but extremely remote and rugged. Most guests arrive via fly-in safari.

Are children welcome?

Yes – children aged six and over are welcome at Serra Cafema. Due to the camp’s remote location and proximity to the river, children must be supervised at all times. Private guides or vehicles may be recommended for families to provide added flexibility.

Giving back

Serra Cafema is a model of low-impact safari tourism. Built in partnership with the Marienfluss Conservancy and the local Himba community, the camp contributes directly to cultural preservation, education, healthcare and conservation initiatives. Its design and operation reflect a deep respect for both the landscape and the people who call it home.

What wildlife might you encounter?

While this is not a Big Five destination, the wildlife here is fascinating and highly adapted:

  • Oryx, springbok and Hartmann’s mountain zebra – Seen grazing in the surrounding dunes and valleys.

  • Nile crocodiles – Found in the Kunene River, often spotted from camp or on boat excursions.

  • Birdlife – Excellent along the river and in the nearby desert, with raptors, bee-eaters and waterbirds common.

  • Desert reptiles and insects – Including chameleons, geckos and other small desert-adapted creatures.

It’s a place to appreciate the subtler rhythms of nature in one of Africa’s most remote ecosystems.

Why we love Serra Cafema

Complete isolation with just the sound of the river drifting past makes this spot so special. It is a blend of desert adventure, elegant simplicity and cultural connection that makes it one of the most restorative places to stay.
