Good to know

How do we get there?

From Windhoek, the easiest way is to fly to Damaraland and then transfer to the lodge. The flight is around 90 minutes, followed by a 45-minute drive.

It is possible to drive all the way, and it is certainly stunning, but does take around seven hours.

Are children welcome?

Yes – children are welcome at Mowani Mountain Camp.

While the camp has a peaceful, grown-up atmosphere, it can work well for older children who are curious about nature and enjoy being outdoors. Activities such as tracking desert-adapted elephants, visiting ancient rock engravings and exploring the dramatic landscape can be tailored to suit families.

Note: The camp’s rocky setting means it may not be suitable for very young children.

Giving back

Mowani Mountain Camp is committed to preserving the fragile desert ecosystem of Damaraland while supporting local communities and cultures.

  • Eco-sensitive design – The camp is built to blend naturally into the granite boulders of its surroundings, using natural materials and traditional thatch to minimise visual and environmental impact.

  • Solar power – Electricity is largely solar-generated, with a strong focus on energy efficiency and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

  • Water conservation – In this arid region, water usage is carefully managed through low-consumption systems and guest awareness.

  • Community support – Mowani plays an active role in supporting local communities through employment, training and cultural preservation, helping to create long-term benefit in this remote area.

  • Wildlife protection – By supporting eco-tourism in the region, Mowani contributes to the long-term conservation of desert-adapted species such as elephant and black rhino, whose survival depends on sustainable human-wildlife coexistence.

What wildlife might you encounter?

While Damaraland’s arid landscape may appear stark, it supports an impressive range of desert-adapted wildlife, many of which can be encountered on guided drives or even from camp.

  • Desert-adapted elephants – These extraordinary creatures have evolved to survive in harsh, dry conditions and are often seen roaming the Aba Huab riverbed.

  • Giraffe, springbok and kudu – Regular sightings of these hardy herbivores add to the region’s quiet sense of wilderness.

  • Hartmann’s mountain zebra – These sure-footed animals are well suited to the rocky terrain and can be seen grazing on open plains.

  • Predators – While more elusive, leopard, brown hyena and even lion have been recorded in the area.

  • Birdlife – Damaraland is home to a variety of bird species, from raptors soaring above the cliffs to colourful rollers and hornbills.

  • Smaller desert creatures – With expert guides, you may also spot lesser-known species such as rock hyrax, ground squirrels and reptiles uniquely adapted to the desert environment.

Why we love Mowani Mountain Camp

The camp is in one of the most idylic settings, nestled between massive granite boulders and with endless views across the desert. There’s a fabulous sense of stillness here that’s hard to match.
