What wildlife can you expect to see?

Pumulani Lodge’s setting within Lake Malawi National Park provides a fantastic opportunity to observe a diverse range of wildlife. The birdlife is particularly impressive, with the African fish eagle being a regular sight. Its distinctive call and dramatic fishing displays make it a highlight for visitors. Other birds commonly spotted include pied and malachite kingfishers, hammerkops, and a variety of herons and egrets along the shoreline.

The lake itself is home to one of the world’s richest freshwater ecosystems, with over 1,000 species of cichlids. These colourful fish, often compared to tropical marine species, are easily visible while snorkelling or diving. Watching their intricate behaviours, from courtship rituals to nest-building, is a fascinating experience.

On land, guests may spot bushbucks, monitor lizards, and baboons roaming near the lodge. The surrounding hills also provide a habitat for smaller mammals such as rock hyraxes. While large predators are not present in the park, the diverse ecosystem offers plenty of opportunities to observe Malawi’s unique wildlife in a peaceful and undisturbed setting.
