Voaara describes itself as eco-conscious rather than an ecolodge. Its bungalows incorporate reclaimed wood, locally sourced materials and furniture made by Madagascan craftspeople, while solar power is used throughout the resort. Indigenous trees are cultivated in the nursery, and the kitchen gardens produce fruit, vegetables and herbs for the restaurants.
The resort has pledged a proportion of its profits and 50% of service fees to projects benefiting Sainte Marie’s communities and natural environment. Its stated priorities include supporting local schools, clinics and churches, replanting indigenous trees and helping to reintroduce endangered wildlife.
Most of the team is Madagascan, including many employees recruited from Sainte Marie itself, helping tourism revenue remain within the local community. Food and bathroom products are also sourced locally wherever possible.
