  1. Eco-Friendly Design and Operations
The camp is constructed with natural materials, blending into the landscape with minimal impact. It is powered primarily by solar energy and follows a comprehensive waste management system, recycling as much as possible and disposing of waste responsibly.
  2. Water Conservation
Located in a semi-arid environment, Tortilis Camp uses water-saving measures, including efficient waste treatment and sustainable water management practices, to reduce water waste. Greywater is filtered and recycled for use in the camp’s gardens.
  3. Support for Local Communities
Tortilis Camp works closely with the local Maasai community by providing employment opportunities, supporting local schools, and purchasing produce and supplies locally to support the regional economy. The camp also collaborates on initiatives that benefit community health and education.
  4. Wildlife Conservation
The camp is actively involved in Amboseli’s conservation efforts, supporting anti-poaching programs and monitoring wildlife populations, including the iconic elephant herds of Amboseli. This helps ensure the long-term health of the local ecosystem.
  5. Reducing Plastic Use
Tortilis Camp has eliminated single-use plastics wherever possible, using reusable water bottles, eco-friendly packaging, and biodegradable toiletries, all aimed at reducing plastic waste and its impact on the environment.
  6. Community-Led Conservation Initiatives
Through partnerships with organisations and conservation trusts, Tortilis Camp supports projects that empower the Maasai community to actively participate in Amboseli’s conservation. This model fosters a symbiotic relationship between the environment and the people who live there.

Wildlife you can expect to see

At Tortilis Camp in Amboseli National Park, you can expect to see a wide array of iconic African wildlife, thanks to the park’s diverse ecosystems and location near Mount Kilimanjaro. Here’s what you can look forward to:

  1. Elephants
Amboseli is famous for its large herds of elephants, some of the largest and oldest in Africa. These gentle giants are often seen crossing the plains and cooling off in the park’s swamps, providing incredible up-close viewing opportunities.
  2. Big Cats
The park is home to lions, cheetahs, and leopards. Lions are frequently seen in prides, often resting or hunting in open areas. Cheetahs are spotted on the plains, while the elusive leopard can occasionally be seen, usually in wooded areas or resting in trees.
  3. Buffalo
African buffalo are common in Amboseli, often found grazing in herds around water sources. Their powerful presence and group dynamics make them a popular sight among safari-goers.
  4. Giraffes
Amboseli hosts the Maasai giraffe, a unique subspecies with distinctive, darker markings. Giraffes can be seen browsing on acacia trees, often silhouetted against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro.
  5. Birdlife
Amboseli is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 400 bird species recorded in the park. Highlights include the African fish eagle, grey-crowned crane, herons, flamingos (seasonal), and the striking lilac-breasted roller.
  6. Zebras and Wildebeests
Both plains zebras and wildebeests roam the park, often seen grazing in mixed herds. They form an essential part of the Amboseli ecosystem and attract predators, creating dynamic scenes of predator-prey interactions.
  7. Hyenas and Jackals
Spotted hyenas and black-backed jackals are present in Amboseli, contributing to the park’s predator diversity. Hyenas, in particular, play an essential role in the ecosystem as scavengers, helping maintain balance within the habitat.
  8. Hippos
In the swampy areas, you may spot hippos wallowing in the water, especially during the heat of the day. The swamps offer a vital refuge for these semi-aquatic animals, and their presence adds to Amboseli’s diverse wildlife population.
