Giving back

House in the Wild is deeply committed to sustainability, focusing on environmental conservation, community development, and responsible tourism. Situated within the Enonkishu Conservancy, the lodge has transformed from a former farm into a thriving conservation area, restoring habitats and promoting biodiversity.

Environmental Initiatives:

  • Solar Energy: The lodge operates on 95% solar power, significantly reducing its carbon footprint.
  • Water Management: A constructed wetlands system naturally filters wastewater, ensuring that water returned to the Mara River is free from pollutants.
  • Sustainable Sourcing: Building materials are sourced from sustainable suppliers, and the lodge grows indigenous tree seedlings to reforest areas previously cleared for charcoal production.

Community Engagement:

  • Education and Empowerment: The lodge supports local education through the construction of Emarti Secondary School and improvements to nearby primary schools, including additional classrooms and a dining room.
  • Enterprise Development: Initiatives like the Wild Women tree nursery and smallholder agricultural cooperatives provide economic opportunities and promote sustainable livelihoods.
  • Cultural Integration: Guests are encouraged to engage with the local Maasai community, fostering cultural exchange and mutual respect.

Conservation Efforts:

  • Regenerative Rangeland Management: Through holistic grazing programs, the lodge collaborates with Maasai families to restore degraded lands, allowing both wildlife and livestock to thrive together.
  • Biodiversity Restoration: The Enonkishu Conservancy has become a sanctuary for various species, including lions, leopards, and elephants, due to effective conservation strategies.
