Highlights

  • Authentic Swahili architecture – Built in traditional Lamu style, Chuchungi House features coral stone walls, carved wooden doors and shaded courtyards that reflect centuries of Swahili craftsmanship and coastal design.

  • A true private home – Chuchungi House is a privately owned residence, not a hotel. Stays feel personal and residential, offering privacy, character and the sense of being a guest in someone’s home rather than a conventional property.

  • Rooftop views and sea breezes – The rooftop terrace is a favourite spot for breakfasts and sundowners, catching cooling breezes and offering views across Lamu’s rooftops, minarets and the Indian Ocean beyond.

  • Old Town immersion – Set within Lamu Old Town, the house allows effortless exploration on foot, from dhow-filled waterfronts and narrow alleyways to markets, mosques and everyday island life.

  • Thoughtful local hosting – Support is discreet but warm, with help arranging guides, dhow trips and meals, alongside insights that deepen understanding of Lamu’s culture and traditions.

  • A slower island rhythm – Life here follows the gentle pace of Lamu itself, shaped by tides, prayer calls and foot traffic, making it ideal for travellers seeking calm, cultural immersion and quiet retreat.

Good to know

How to get there

From Nairobi, fly to Manda Airport, a journey of around one hour. On arrival, a short boat transfer crosses the channel to Shela, gliding past dhows and mangroves. From the jetty, it’s a gentle walk through sandy lanes to Chuchungi House, tucked just behind the beach and dunes. From the airport the journey takes around 30 mins.

Are children welcome?

Yes, children are welcome at Chuchungi House, but it suits families best with older children.

As a private Swahili home, the atmosphere is calm and residential rather than activity-led. There are stairs, open terraces and no formal child facilities, so supervision is important. Nanny services can be booked in advance so please do ask.

Giving back

Chuchungi House reflects a low-impact, community-rooted way of staying in Lamu. As a restored Swahili home, it prioritises preservation over new build, using traditional materials and passive design to keep interiors cool naturally. Power and water use are consciously managed, with an emphasis on simplicity rather than excess. Supplies and services are sourced locally wherever possible, supporting Lamu’s artisans, boatmen and small businesses. By operating as a private home rather than a hotel, Chuchungi House maintains a lighter footprint, encourages respectful engagement with local culture, and supports the long-term preservation of Lamu’s architectural and social heritage.

How to spend your time

For many people, this is time to sit back and do very little. However, if you do get a bit twitchy, there is a huge amount to do from this wonderful spot:

  • Explore Shela and Lamu Old Town on foot – Wander sandy lanes, carved doorways and quiet squares, discovering mosques, small cafés and everyday island life at a gentle pace.

  • Dhow sailing at sunset – Head out on a traditional dhow for an unhurried sail along the channel, often timed with sundowners as the light softens and the call to prayer drifts across the water.

  • Beach walks at Shela – Long, empty stretches of sand invite early morning or late afternoon walks, with fishermen hauling nets and camels passing quietly by.

  • Swahili culture and history – Arrange a local guide to bring Lamu’s layered history to life, from its trading past to poetry, architecture and living traditions.

  • Yoga, reading and slow mornings – Rooftop terraces and shaded corners are made for stillness, whether stretching, journalling or simply watching the day unfold.

  • Boat trips to nearby islands – Visit mangroves, sandbanks or neighbouring villages, combining nature, swimming and a deeper sense of the archipelago.

Why we love Chuchungi House

It’s a cliché to say that you feel at home the second you arrive, but that is exactly what happens when you get to Chuchungi in this quiet corner of Lamu. This is perhaps best illustrated by the number of people who rebook for the following year, while they are still there.
