Wildlife you can expect to see

At Angama Amboseli, you can expect to see a rich diversity of wildlife, thanks to its unique location in the Kimana Sanctuary, part of the greater Amboseli ecosystem. Here’s a list of some of the key wildlife you’re likely to encounter:

  1. Elephants
Amboseli is renowned for its large, free-roaming elephant herds, and Kimana Sanctuary offers excellent opportunities to observe these majestic animals up close, often with Mount Kilimanjaro as a backdrop. The elephants in this area are among the most studied and protected in Africa, known for their impressive size and social dynamics.
  2. Big Cats
The sanctuary is home to lions, cheetahs, and leopards. While lions are often seen in family groups, cheetahs are typically spotted hunting across the open plains. Leopards are more elusive but can sometimes be seen resting in the trees or prowling at dawn and dusk.
  3. Buffalo
Large herds of African buffalo are common in the sanctuary. These animals are often seen near water sources, grazing in groups and providing dramatic wildlife viewing opportunities, especially when interacting with other animals like elephants and predators.
  4. Giraffes
The Maasai giraffe, a subspecies unique to East Africa, is frequently seen browsing on acacia trees. Their distinctive coat patterns make them particularly photogenic, and they add a serene presence to the landscape.
  5. Antelope Species
Visitors can see a variety of antelope species, including impalas, Grant’s gazelles, Thomson’s gazelles, elands, and dik-diks. These species are key prey for the sanctuary’s predators and can be found grazing throughout the area.
  6. Birdlife
Angama Amboseli is a fantastic destination for birdwatchers, with over 400 bird species recorded in the Amboseli ecosystem. Notable species include the African fish eagle, grey-crowned crane, herons, pelicans, and seasonal flocks of flamingos.
  7. Zebras and Wildebeests
Plains zebras and wildebeests are abundant in Kimana Sanctuary, often moving in mixed herds and providing stunning wildlife scenes, especially during the dry season when they congregate near water sources.
  8. Hyenas and Jackals
Spotted hyenas and black-backed jackals are among the smaller carnivores found in the area. They play an essential role in the ecosystem as scavengers and can often be seen in the early morning or late evening.
