Giving back

The environmental policy of the House in the Wild collection, which includes Amani House, is deeply rooted in sustainable practices and community engagement. The organisation emphasises strong community partnerships to enhance economic and social well-being, focusing on improving access to quality education and promoting gender empowerment. Initiatives include eco-training scholarships, support for local agricultural cooperatives, and enterprise projects like the Wild Women tree nursery.

The collection implements sustainable rangeland management in partnership with organisations like the Savory Institute. They minimise their environmental footprint by sourcing sustainable building materials, eliminating single-use plastics, and recycling. A “constructed wetlands” system ensures that water returned to the Mara River is free from pollutants. Additionally, they support local biodiversity through an indigenous tree nursery capable of producing up to 6,000 seedlings per month, and guests are encouraged to participate in tree planting.

Wildlife you are likely to see

At Amani House in the Maasai Mara, you can expect to see a wide variety of wildlife, including:

  • Lions: Frequently spotted lounging or hunting, especially in the open grasslands of the Mara.
  • Elephants: Majestic herds are often seen near the rivers or in the forests surrounding the Mara.
  • Leopards: These elusive predators can be spotted in the trees or stalking prey, particularly in the early mornings.
  • Cheetahs: Known for their speed, cheetahs are often seen racing across the plains in pursuit of prey.
  • Giraffes: These gentle giants can be found grazing on acacia trees or strolling across the savannah.
  • Wildebeest and Zebras: Particularly during the Great Migration, vast herds of wildebeest and zebra fill the plains.
  • Buffaloes: Large herds of buffalo roam in search of grazing grounds, often seen near water sources.
  • Hyenas: Active during dawn and dusk, these opportunistic feeders can be spotted in the wild.
  • Wild Dogs: Although rarer, these endangered predators can occasionally be seen hunting or playing in packs.
  • Birdlife: The Mara is home to a rich variety of birds, including vultures, raptors, and the vibrant lilac-breasted roller.
