Tokyo is usually the first stop on a Japanese itinerary and it is a city with so much to offer. Tokyo has some pretty incredible architecture that is ever evolving, with futuristic skyscrapers sitting alongside ancient traditional buildings that have stood for centuries. You can admire this surreal skyline from your hotel balcony, or while exploring the Imperial Palace and its gardens. It is this contrast between old and new that makes Tokyo so fascinating, where the historic streets of Asakusa and the ancient grounds of Meiji Jingu exist alongside the bright lights of Shibuya, the luxury boutiques of Ginza and the soaring skyline of Shinjuku.
You can’t miss the famous food scene in Tokyo, and it is important to get yourself booked into one of the city’s brilliant restaurants, or take part in a culinary experience, whether that be exploring Tsukiji Outer Market with a chef, or taking part in your own private sushi masterclass. Beyond its incredible cuisine, Tokyo is home to peaceful gardens, world class museums, unique shopping districts and a culture that effortlessly balances centuries old traditions with cutting edge innovation.
Tokyo has more Michelin starred restaurants than any other city in the world. The city is renowned for its exceptional food scene, from traditional sushi and kaiseki dining to small neighbourhood restaurants serving local favourites.
Tokyo was once a fishing village. Before becoming one of the world’s largest cities, Tokyo was a small fishing village called Edo. It grew rapidly from the 17th century onwards and became the centre of political power under the Tokugawa shogunate.

Nothing but the best. Browse our handpicked, tried-and-tested luxury hotels.
Tokyo is served by two international airports: Narita International Airport and Haneda Airport. Most international flights arrive into Haneda, which is closer to central Tokyo and offers convenient connections into the city. From Haneda, the journey to central Tokyo takes around 30 minutes by private transfer, while Narita is approximately 60 to 90 minutes away depending on traffic and transport options.
Tokyo is well connected internationally, with direct flights available from many major cities around the world. From the UK, there are direct flights from London to Tokyo, with a flight time of approximately 14 hours. The city also acts as an excellent gateway for exploring the rest of Japan, with the extensive Shinkansen bullet train network connecting Tokyo with destinations including Kyoto, Osaka, Kanazawa and Hakone.
You can visit Tokyo all year round, but the best time to visit Tokyo is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the weather is mild and the city’s gardens and parks are at their most beautiful. Spring is particularly popular for cherry blossom season, when places such as Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Chidorigafuchi and Ueno Park are transformed with delicate pink blooms.
Autumn is another wonderful time to visit, with cooler temperatures and colourful foliage bringing Tokyo’s gardens and surrounding landscapes to life. Summer (June to August) can be hot and humid, although it is a great time to experience seasonal festivals and fireworks, while winter (December to February) offers crisp weather, fewer crowds and clear views of Mount Fuji on a good day.
