  • A True Ryokan Experience in a Historic Setting: Traditional tatami mat rooms, shoji screens, and futon bedding create an authentic atmosphere, while the warmth of a sunken hearth evokes the charm of old-world Japan.
  • Seasonal Kaiseki Cuisine Inspired by the Region: Meticulously crafted multi-course meals showcase the finest local ingredients, from Hida beef to freshly harvested mountain vegetables, paired with carefully selected sake.
  • Serene Riverside Onsen for Ultimate Relaxation: Indoor and open-air hot spring baths, fed by natural mineral-rich waters, provide a restorative escape surrounded by the gentle sounds of the Miya River.
  • A Secluded Sanctuary with Easy Access to Takayama: Despite its hidden-away feel, the ryokan is just a short drive from Takayama’s Edo-period old town, where wooden merchant houses, sake breweries, and artisan shops line the streets.
  • Personalised Omotenashi Hospitality: From seamless service to thoughtful touches such as seasonal teas and handcrafted ceramics, every detail is carefully considered to ensure a deeply enriching stay.

Please note that we are expecting new photography from the ryokan and some images here are from Takayama.

The most convenient way to reach Wanosato is by private transfer. The ryokan is a 20-minute drive from JR Takayama Station.

For those arriving by air, the nearest major airport is Chubu Centrair International Airport, with private charter flights or helicopter transfers available to nearby airstrips. From Nagoya, a private car transfer offers a comfortable journey through the scenic Hida region, taking approximately two and a half hours. Helicopter charters from Nagoya can also be arranged for a faster and more exclusive arrival.

Are children welcome?

Children aged five and above are welcome to stay in the detached guest rooms, where they can enjoy a more spacious and family-friendly setting. However, to maintain the ryokan’s serene atmosphere, accommodation is not available for children under five.

Giving back

Wanosato is dedicated to preserving Takayama’s cultural and natural heritage. The ryokan incorporates traditional architectural elements, such as the 160-year-old Gassho-zukuri thatched-roof farmhouse, maintaining the region’s historical aesthetics. Culinary offerings highlight local ingredients, including sansai (mountain vegetables), wasakana (river fish), and Hida beef, supporting local farmers and producers.

Why we love Wanosato Ryokan

Stepping into Wanosato feels like entering a different era. The combination of historic architecture, flawless hospitality, and the soothing presence of the surrounding forest makes this a truly special place to experience Japan’s ryokan culture at its finest.
