Highlights

  • Serene Retreat: Tucked away in the heart of Shuzenji, Asaba Ryokan is a 535-year-old sanctuary built by the Asaba fmaily, where tradition and tranquillity meet. Overlooking a reflective pond and surrounded by bamboo groves, it offers an authentic escape into old Japan.
  • Natural Hot Springs: The ryokan’s onsen baths draw from the region’s pure thermal waters, providing a deeply restorative experience with views of the surrounding forest. Private open-air baths allow for moments of quiet relaxation.
  • Kaiseki Dining At Its Finest: The multi-course kaiseki menu showcases the best of Izu’s seasonal ingredients, prepared with precision and artistry. Every dish is designed to balance flavour, texture, and presentation, making each meal an experience in itself.
  • An Architectural Masterpiece Of Japanese Minimalism: Tatami-matted rooms with sliding shoji doors, delicate paper lanterns, and warm cedar accents reflect the timeless simplicity of Japanese design. Each space is carefully curated to encourage stillness and mindfulness.
  • A Floating Noh Stage Over The Pond: One of Asaba’s most unique features is its open-air Noh theatre, set on a stage that appears to float above the water. Seasonal performances bring centuries-old Japanese traditions to life in a magical setting.
  • A Gateway To Nature And Culture: With Shuzenji Temple and a picturesque bamboo grove just a short walk away, the ryokan is perfectly positioned for exploring the town’s rich cultural heritage. Scenic riverside trails and local hot spring footbaths offer further ways to connect with the landscape.

Good to know

How to get there

A private transfer from Tokyo takes around three hours, depending on traffic. Alternatively, the Shinkansen to Mishima Station takes 50 minutes, followed by a 30-minute private transfer to the ryokan. For the fastest option, a helicopter transfer from Tokyo can be arranged, landing near Shuzenji with a short drive to the property.

Are children welcome?

Yes, children are welcome at Asaba Ryokan, but the peaceful atmosphere is best suited to those who can appreciate its tranquillity. Families can enjoy spacious tatami rooms and private dining experiences tailored to their needs.

Giving back

Asaba Ryokan is committed to sustainability and cultural preservation. Ingredients for its kaiseki cuisine are sourced from local farmers and fishermen, supporting small producers and reducing food miles. The ryokan follows eco-friendly practices, including water conservation, waste reduction, and the use of natural materials in its construction and furnishings.

A key focus is the preservation of Noh theatre, one of Japan’s oldest performing arts. The ryokan maintains its traditional floating Noh stage, hosting seasonal performances to keep this cultural heritage alive. It also collaborates with local artisans, commissioning handmade ceramics, washi paper, and textiles, ensuring these traditional crafts continue to thrive.

Why we love Asaba Ryokan

The views here are extraordinary in every season. Framed beautifully from ever window; cherry blossoms mirrored in the pond to autumn’s vivid reds and winter’s silent snowfall, the scenery is unmatched.
