Luxury Canada Itinerary

A Journey from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland

Shaped by salt air, close-knit communities and wide horizons, north-east Canada reveals itself slowly. This journey traces the Atlantic edge from Nova Scotia to remote Newfoundland, exploring places where landscape and daily life remain closely entwined.

Time in Halifax offers an effortless introduction, with its maritime history, walkable waterfront and quietly confident food scene. From here, private guiding opens up the Canadian province’s coastline, from lighthouse-studded headlands and UNESCO-listed towns to fertile valleys celebrated for lobster, wine and family-run producers.

Travelling north, the pace softens along the Northumberland Shore. Red-sand beaches, rural villages and tidal landscapes set a calmer rhythm. Days are shaped by nature and simple pleasures – watching the Bay of Fundy’s tides rise and fall, visiting local farms and spending time by the sea.

The journey concludes on far-flung Fogo Island, reached via scenic drive and ferry through Newfoundland’s wild interior. Time here is deliberately unhurried. Days follow the light and weather, with coastal walks, whale-spotting and conversations with islanders. Staying at Fogo Island Inn, the focus is on people as much as place – a thoughtful, grounding close to a journey defined by authenticity and quiet discovery.

Shifting skies

Both land and ocean shape Atlantic Canada’s weather. Warm currents from the Gulf Stream meet cooler northern air, creating fresh sea breezes, shifting light and fast-changing skies. It’s why summer days feel bright and mild, and why the coast always seems alive with movement and drama.

Itinerary Highlights

Peggy's Cove

Peggy's Cove, Halifax, Nova Scotia

Standing at Peggy’s Cove feels like stepping onto the raw edge of Atlantic Canada. Granite rocks tumble into the ocean, waves crash nearby and fishing boats bob in sheltered coves. The lighthouse anchors the scene, yet it is the wind, salt air and quiet resilience of the village that linger longest.

Lunenburg

Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

Colourful wooden houses climb the hillside above Lunenburg’s harbour, a town shaped by fishing, shipbuilding and salt air. The streets feel quietly lived-in rather than staged, with working boats, local cafés and a strong sense of continuity. As a UNESCO-listed town, history is ever-present yet lightly worn, woven into daily life and the steady rhythm of the waterfront.

Lobsters and wine

Nova Scotia lobster boat

Head inland to the gentle rhythms of the Annapolis Valley, where orchards, farmland and tidal rivers shape the landscape. From the Blomidon Look-Off, sweeping views stretch across the Minas Basin and its remarkable tides.

A visit to a working lobster pound reveals the craft behind Nova Scotia’s most celebrated catch, before a private tasting at a boutique vineyard introduces the valley’s quietly confident, cool-climate wines.

Fundy Discovery and Markets

The Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia

The day begins at Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market, where local produce, fresh baking and Atlantic flavours set the tone. Travelling north, the landscape broadens at the Fundy Discovery Site, timed to witness the tidal bore surge upriver – a striking display of natural force shaped by the immense tides of the Bay of Fundy. The journey continues to Tatamagouche for an unhurried wander and lunch, before you arrive on the Northumberland Shore in time for dinner overlooking the sea.

Maple syrup, beer + oysters

Maple Syrup, Canada

Drive inland with your guide to a family-run maple farm, where syrup is still made slowly over a wood-fired evaporator. Tastings introduce local beers, ciders and small-batch drinks, complemented by a gentle woodland walk nearby.

By midday, continue to a Malagash oyster farm to discover the craft and collect a few fresh oysters, before ending the day with a seaside picnic at Blue Sea Beach, backed by dunes and wide Atlantic skies.

High tides

Hopewell Rocks, New Brunswick

One of the journey’s defining moments comes on the Bay of Fundy, where the world’s highest tides reshape the landscape twice daily. At Hopewell Rocks, you might walk on the ocean floor beneath vast, flowerpot-shaped cliffs or kayak silently between them as the sea returns. The contrast is striking – raw natural spectacle followed by the easy charm of Moncton, where Acadian culture, creativity and a relaxed urban rhythm complete the experience.

Fogo Island

Fogo Island, Newfoundland

A stay at Fogo Island Inn is less about ticking boxes and more about slipping into the island’s rhythm. Time stretches and softens, shaped by tides, weather and conversations with locals. Highlights include walking wild coastal trails, spotting whales or drifting icebergs and joining community-hosted outings that offer insight into everyday island life. Back at the inn, craft, film, sauna rituals and local cooking complete an experience rooted in place, presence and quiet reflection.
