Visit an Elephant Orphanage

Reteti Elephant Orphanage, located in northern Kenya, is the first community-owned elephant sanctuary in Africa. Established in 2016, it operates in the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, providing care for orphaned and abandoned elephant calves. The sanctuary’s mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release these elephants back into the wild. Reteti is unique for its deep involvement with the local Samburu community, offering employment and fostering a sense of stewardship over wildlife. The orphanage not only aids in elephant conservation but also promotes environmental education and awareness, highlighting the crucial role of community engagement in wildlife preservation.

Spend time with the Samburu

The Samburu people are a semi-nomadic pastoralist community renowned for their vibrant culture and traditions. Their social structure is organised around age sets and clans, with strong emphasis on community and family.
