Luxury Japan Itinerary

Japan's Hidden Gems

Embark on a 2-week odyssey through Japan’s hidden gems, a journey (mostly) away from the bustling crowds, to find the country’s serene essence.

Begin in Kyoto’s ancient temples and tea houses hidden in bamboo groves, then journey to the mountain villages of Miyama and Ohara, where thatched-roof houses whisper tales of tradition, to learn about ancient Satoyama culture.

Hiroshima is now a bustling modern city, but the Atomic Bomb Dome and Peace Park are poignant reminders of the city’s heartbreaking past, as are the thousands of brightly coloured paper cranes made by school children as symbols of peace.

Take a tranquil ferry ride to the Sacred Island of Miyajima to visit the floating torii gate and Itsukushima Shrine. Absorb the island’s spiritual aura, before continuing to Daisho-in, a Buddhist temple at the foot of Mt. Misen.

In Nara and the hills beyond, wander among sacred deer and ancient shrines, witnessing Japan’s spiritual roots. Then, as you begin to find true serenity and a calm sense of self… jump into the ring with a sumo wrestler! The it’s off to Tokyo for some Kendo (fighting with ‘stick swords’), before a night tour of the food scene and exploring the weird and wonderful suburbs of this buzzing city.

Slow your breathing as you travel to Atami, for the sea views, art, and a soak in onsen baths, before the scenic beauty of Izu unfolds before you. Take your time here, perhaps climbing one of the coastal mountains as your journey in this spectacular country comes to an end, and appreciate the scenes of serene landscapes, ancient traditions, and intimate cultural encounters you’ve witnessed.

HISTORICAL INSIGHT

Nara was the national capital of Japan from 710 to 784 (previously called Heijo-kyō) and still retains its ancient Japanese atmosphere. The city is most noted for the many ancient Japanese Buddhist buildings including the Seven Great Temples of Nara.

Itinerary Highlights

Weird and Wonderful Tokyo

Explore Tokyo’s vibrant blend of tradition and modernity, starting at Meiji Shrine, a serene oasis honouring Emperor Meiji. Witness Tokyo’s youth culture hub in Shibuya, home to the iconic crossing and eclectic fashion. Discover Omotesando’s architectural marvels and visit Nezu Art Museum and if time allows, Nakano’s anime haven at Nakano Broadway. This is a big day, capturing Tokyo’s contrasts, from tranquil shrines to bustling districts, providing a glimpse into the city’s diverse culture and creativity.

Izu Mountains and Coastlines

The Izu Peninsula is known for its mountains and ocean views, and on a good day Mt. Fuji can be seen, but today drive to Mt. Omuro for a leisurely hike, its uniquely shaped summit offering visual proof of Izu’s volcanic birth. Next is the Jogasaki Coastline for another hike along rugged, ocean-carved shores, before returning to Shuzenji, perhaps making a stop at a hot spring resort for a snack and a foot bath. Private car and driver included today.

The mountain villages of Miyajima and Ohara

Leave (some of) the crowds behind to visit the beautiful mountain villages of Miyama and Ohara, famous for their thatched roof (kayabuki) farmhouses, most of which here are where people still live and work. The pace of life is slow, so enjoy the peace and tranquillity whilst learning about Japan’s ancient Satoyama culture.

A meeting with a Hibakusha

Hibakusha, otherwise known as atomic bomb survivors still reside within Hiroshima and Nagasaki today, though as their population ages, their stories are being lost to the sands of time. Encounter a Hibakusha and learn about one of the most significant moments in our history from someone who experienced it first-hand. Please note this experience is subject to availability of the individual in question.

Private dinner with a Geisha

Films and books strive to capture the essence of geisha, but tonight over a casual dinner, you’ll meet a geisha as they remove some of the cultural barriers, inviting conversation about the geisha lifestyle. This will be a fun and friendly encounter, suitable for adults and children, often including games and other engaging activities.

The Nara Hills and Beyond

Exploring the mountainous area bordering Nara and Mie prefectures with your host, start with a walk along the Akame Waterfalls ravine, once a ninja training ground, where a series of 48 waterfalls appear around every corner. Continue to Muroji Temple, historically a haven for female Buddhist monks. Finally, explore Murou Art Forest, an open-air museum featuring works by Israeli artist, Dani Caravan
