The Amazon Rainforest covers more than half of all the land in Peru, providing crucial habitat for animals which do not exist anywhere else, perhaps even tribes of talking bears who have never had contact with the outside world.

The Itinerary

A day of discovery in Lima

Uncover Lima with a private guide, who will tailor the experience to suit the ages and interests of your children. Start in Pachacamac, exploring pyramids and temples where kids can discover their inner Indiana Jones, enjoy lunch in bohemian Barranco, then check out the UNESCO-listed central district on foot – is your family brave enough to enter the catacombs in search of skeletons? Finish at the Magic Water Circuit Park, with its playful fountains and light show.

A half-day exploring Sacsayhuaman and Cuzco City

This immersive walking tour unveils Cuzco’s rich Incan heritage and vibrant presence through its architectural marvels and atmospheric neighbourhoods. Begin at the impressive ruins of Sacsayhuaman, then explore San Cristobal church, built atop an Inca palace with stunning city views. Stroll through San Blas’ streets to the Plaza de Armas and its magnificent cathedral, then visit Qoricancha, the Sun Temple and centre of the Inca Empire, showcasing exquisitely preserved stonework. Finally, enjoy free time wandering Cuzco’s charming lanes and plazas, taking in local sights and shops (we’ll provide our top tips).

Cuzco art workshop

Take a short Cuzco art workshop and work with a local artist to decorate your very own Pucara Bull. You will learn and apply the gilding techniques so important to traditional Cuzco art and discover the history of the bulls and their role in local customs. Your workshop takes place in Florencia y Fortunata Cafe and will be led by a member of the Totemiq Art Collective.

Full day rafting the Black Canyon of the Rio Apurimac

Get ready for an adrenaline-fuelled day rafting down the Apurimac River. Suitable for all abilities and generally ages 10 and up (conditions vary), descend into the canyon and inflate your rafts on the riverbank. With Peru’s best rafting team at the helm, navigate spectacular scenery, exhilarating rapids and gentle floats. Explore side canyons and enjoy a riverside picnic before reaching Puente Huallpacachaca and returning to Cuzco.

Tour of Machu Picchu ruins

Delve into the mysteries of Machu Picchu with your private guide, avoiding crowds with an 8am entrance, then climb Wayna Picchu Mountain for a scenic journey through the Sacred Valley back to Cuzco. This full-day tour immerses your family in the history of Peru’s most iconic archaeological treasure.

E bike + pachamanca lunch

Enjoy an e-bike excursion outside Urubamba, following dirt roads through hamlets and corn fields with Andes views. Cross the Urubamba River and cycle an ancient Incan trail past ruins and vast terraces to Ollantaytambo for a traditional Pachamanca lunch at El Albergue farm – think meats, vegetables and herbs cooked underground. Tour the organic farm and distillery before digging into the delicious earth-baked feast. In the afternoon, explore the impressive Inca ruins and village of Ollantaytambo, site of a major Spanish-Inca battle.

Watersports on Lake Huaypo

Lake Huaypo is a wonderfully relaxed spot to have some fun on the water and enjoy stunning views of the snow-capped Vilanota mountains. Choose between stand-up paddleboards or sit-on-kayaks, with full wetsuits provided. Your expert guide will give you full instructions before you head out through the reeds and onto the lake itself. After a picnic lunch, visit the incredible ruins of Moray and the Maras saltpans.

Amazonian adventures

The jungle comes alive early in the morning so be prepared for the occasional predawn wake up to give yourself the best chance of seeing the wildlifemonkeys, birds, frogs, capybara, giant anteaters and ants galore. Your resident guides will accompany you into the jungle either on foot or by dugout canoe – will you spot the rare black caiman? Evenings can be spent taking in spectacular sunsets or heading out in search of the nocturnal mammals.
