Luxury Namibia Itinerary

8-Day Road Trip in Namibia

Namibia is an ideal self-drive destination, offering vast landscapes and safe, quiet roads. In eight days, you can navigate deserts and savannahs at your own pace, stopping whenever the scenery or wildlife inspires you.

Depart Windhoek for a five and a half hour drive to Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, situated amongst some of Africa’s tallest orange sand dunes within the ancient Namib Desert. During your time here, explore the national park and visit Deadvlei, a surreal saltpan and time capsule of fossilised camelthorn trees. These ghostly remains have stood for over 900 years, ever since shifting dunes cut off the water source to what was once a lush marsh.

For those seeking a challenge, we recommend scaling one of the largest dunes in Africa, Big Daddy, Standing at 325m. It offers a strenuous climb with rewarding views over the Deadvlei pan.

To break up the journey from Sossusvlei to Damaraland, we suggest a stopover in Swakopmund. Here, you can embark on a scenic flight along the Skeleton Coast for a perspective of where the sea meets the sand dunes from above, soaring over two haunting shipwrecks stranded in the sand.

A three hour drive north brings you to Damaraland, where the landscape turns wild and rugged, characterised by magnificent table-topped mountains, ancient rock formations and bizarre vegetation. You will spend a morning tracking the rare desert-adapted elephant.

From Damaraland, drive to Etosha National Park for two nights of game-viewing in one of Southern Africa’s premier wildlife destinations. For your final night, it is fascinating to stay at Okonjima Luxury Bush Camp in the Okonjima Nature Reserve. It is home to the AfriCat Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the long-term conservation of Namibia’s large carnivores and endangered species. Originally founded to address human-wildlife conflict on a family cattle farm, it has evolved into a global leader in ecological research and predator welfare.

DID YOU KNOW?

Desert-adapted elephants in north-west Namibia, around Kaokoland and the Hoanib River, are the same species as African bush elephants (Loxodonta africana) but have developed remarkable adaptations to survive the challenging conditions.

They travel hundreds of kilometres along ancient migration routes for food and water, survive several days without drinking by feeding on drought-resistant plants, and even dig wells in dry riverbeds. Their diet focuses on tough trees like mopane, myrrh and camelthorn, while their leaner bodies and larger, padded feet let them move easily across sand and rocky terrain. They also form smaller family groups, making it easier for the herd to survive when resources are scarce.

Namib Desert Dunes & Deadvlei

Deadvlei, Namibia

Experience the Namib-Naukluft National Park at first light, when soft sunlight and long shadows bring the towering dunes to life.Have a go at ascending one of the largest sand dunes in Africa, Big Daddy, 325 metres of rust-red sand. Descend into Deadvlei, where ancient, skeletal camel-thorn trees punctuate a white saltpan in a scene of surreal beauty.

Nearby, Sesriem Canyon offers a quiet contrast, its gorge carved over millions of years by the Tsauchab River, providing a moment of cool shade amid the vast desert.

From Swakopmund, soar over endless red dunes, stark white gravel plains, and the abandoned Charlottenfelder diamond mining camps before reaching the rugged coastline.

Pass the eerie Eduard Bohlen and Shawnee shipwrecks, stranded in sand and surf, then admire the shimmering lagoon of Sandwich Harbour and the radiant salt pans south of Walvis Bay. This aerial journey offers a surreal, unforgettable perspective on Namibia’s desert solitude.
