Highlights

  • Location Overlooking Borobudur: Set within a natural amphitheatre, Amanjiwo offers uninterrupted views of Borobudur, the Unesco World Heritage Site. Four volcanoes rise on the horizon, and emerald rice paddies stretch below.
  • Architecture with meaning: The resort’s design reflects Borobudur’s tiered form. A central limestone rotunda leads down through crescents of suites, inviting guests into a calm, contemplative journey.
  • Spacious suites and private pools: All suites open onto private garden terraces. Fourteen have their own swimming pools. The Dalem Jiwo Suite features two bedroom pavilions and a 15‑metre pool.
  • Dining: The rotunda’s Bar and Restaurant, and the Pool Club, serve Indonesian and international dishes with sweeping views across the Kedu Plain. Guests can also enjoy intimate picnics on the Progo River.
  • Experiences: Guests can enjoy Javanese gamelan and sinden performances, traditional wayang kulit shadow puppet shows, and lectures on Borobudur led by a resident anthropologist.
  • Wellness and movement: Beyond spa treatments, activities include sunrise yoga, guided treks into the Menoreh Hills, and visits to local markets and villages by andong (horse-drawn cart).

Good to know

How do we get there?

The nearest airport to Amanjiwo is Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA). From here, it’s a 90-minute drive to reach the resort.

Are children welcome?

Amanjiwo welcomes children, and has activities to suit all ages. Many experiences are thoughtfully designed with a nod to Javanese culture, from kite-making to learning the rhythms and movements of traditional dance.

Babysitters are available for younger children, while older ones can dip into a regular programme of organised activities, including arts and crafts, storytelling, games and sports.

Giving back

Amanjiwo integrates sustainability into daily life and village partnerships. It supports Yayasan Badan Wakaf school with maintenance, scholarships, a library and learning resources, and hosts batik classes to pass on traditional skills.

Environmental care includes reforestation on Menoreh Hill, restoring forest around Borobudur, and reducing plastic use. A permaculture-inspired composting system enriches the gardens, and guests can join tree-planting activities, leaving a lasting impact on the landscape.

What's nearby?

Amanjiwo is just minutes from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Borobudur. Two more UNESCO listed landmarks are within an easy one-hour drive: the Prambanan Temple Complex and Yogyakarta’s Cosmological Axis.

Central Java’s varied terrain is on the doorstep. From the steep flanks of Mount Merapi to the lush Menoreh Hills, the area is ideal for trekking and gentle exploration.

Other nearby sites include the temples of Pawon and Mendut, built around 800 AD, the 7th- and 8th-century Hindu temples of the Dieng Plateau, and the atmospheric ruins of Ratu Boko, an ancient royal complex overlooking the plains.

Why we love Amanjiwo

We love Amanjiwo for its extraordinary setting. The moment you step out of the car, the ancient Buddhist site of Borobudur comes into view. The resort feels as though it revolves around the temple in every aspect, from the architecture to the layout of the terraces and suites!
