The Southern Highlands offer a quieter, more contemplative side of Ecuador. While the Avenue of the Volcanoes is defined by dramatic peaks, this region is about colonial cities, mountain landscapes and traditions that have endured for centuries.
At its heart lies Cuenca, widely regarded as Ecuador’s most beautiful city. Its elegant churches, leafy squares and riverside cafés invite you to slow down, while artisan workshops continue centuries-old crafts, from fine Panama hats to ceramics and silverwork. Beyond the city, the scenery changes quickly. The rolling countryside gives way to the lakes, forests and rugged páramo of Cajas National Park, where well-marked trails wind through one of the most important high-altitude ecosystems in the Andes.
Travelling south also reveals a more authentic rhythm of life. Small villages, colourful markets and family-run haciendas provide opportunities to meet local communities and experience Ecuador away from the better-known tourist trail.
For those with more time, the Southern Highlands form a natural gateway to the Inca ruins of Ingapirca or the tranquil valley of Vilcabamba before continuing into Peru. Whether you’re drawn by culture, hiking or simply the chance to experience Ecuador at a gentler pace, this is a region that rewards those willing to linger.

Despite its name, almost every genuine Panama hat is made in Ecuador. The finest hats are handwoven from toquilla palm by artisans around Cuenca, with the most exceptional examples taking several months to complete.
Cajas National Park contains more than 270 lakes carved by ancient glaciers. These high-altitude wetlands act as a giant natural sponge, capturing mist and rainfall before supplying fresh water to Cuenca and much of southern Ecuador year-round.
Nothing but the best. Browse our handpicked, tried-and-tested luxury lodges.
The quickest way to reach Ecuador’s Southern Highlands is with a 50-minute flight from Quito to Cuenca. Alternatively, travel overland through the Andes, stopping along the Avenue of the Volcanoes, Riobamba or Ingapirca en route. The scenic drive takes around eight to ten hours in total, making it an excellent option if you want to explore more of Ecuador rather than simply travelling between destinations.
The Southern Highlands can be enjoyed throughout the year thanks to their spring-like climate, but we particularly love June to September. These are typically the driest months, making conditions ideal for exploring Cuenca’s historic streets, hiking in Cajas National Park and enjoying clear mountain views. Travelling during these months also coincides with colourful local festivals and some of the best opportunities for outdoor activities.
