Good to know

How to get there

Begin with a 30-minute flight from Quito to Coca (Francisco de Orellana), the main gateway to Ecuador’s Amazon. On arrival, you’ll be met by La Selva’s team and transferred to the Napo River, where a motorised canoe takes you deep into the rainforest. After around two hours on the river, a short forest walk leads to a traditional paddle canoe for the final crossing of Garzacocha Lagoon, arriving at the lodge in approximately five hours from Quito.

Are children welcome?

Yes. La Selva is one of the most family-friendly lodges in the Ecuadorian Amazon and welcomes children aged three and above.

Families can stay in spacious Family Suites, while younger guests can take part in the Junior Naturalist Programme, designed to introduce them to the rainforest through fun, hands-on activities. Children receive their own explorer kit and enjoy age-appropriate guiding, with those aged 3–6 accompanied by a private guide for added safety and flexibility. Reduced rates are also available for children under 12.

Giving back

La Selva Eco-Lodge has long been recognised as one of Ecuador’s pioneers in sustainable rainforest tourism. Its approach focuses on conservation, community partnerships and supporting scientific research.

  • Protecting the Amazon – The lodge helps safeguard more than 2,000 hectares of primary rainforest surrounding Garzacocha Lagoon, preserving habitat for hundreds of bird species, primates and other wildlife.
  • Supporting local communities – La Selva works closely with neighbouring Kichwa communities, providing employment, purchasing local produce and supporting community-led initiatives.
  • Conservation through tourism – Guest visits directly contribute to protecting rainforest that might otherwise be vulnerable to logging or other forms of development.
  • Scientific research – The lodge regularly hosts researchers, biologists and conservation projects, helping to improve understanding of Amazonian ecosystems and wildlife.
  • Reducing environmental impact – Sustainable practices include responsible waste management, wastewater treatment, energy-efficient operations and reducing single-use plastics wherever possible.
  • Responsible guiding – Naturalist guides follow strict wildlife-viewing protocols, ensuring encounters have minimal impact on the rainforest and its inhabitants.

Why we love La Selva Eco-Lodge

Many Amazon lodges offer excellent wildlife, but La Selva has a wonderfully immersive feel. The journey across Garzacocha Lagoon immediately sets the tone, while the surrounding forest delivers consistently rewarding wildlife sightings. For us, it offers the sweet spot between comfortable accommodation, exceptional guiding and a genuine sense of being deep in the Ecuadorian Amazon rather than simply looking at it from the sidelines.
