About the trip

Echoes of the Pharaohs: A Small Group Trip Through Ancient Egypt is a carefully curated small group trip which has been designed to combine the intimacy of private travel with the shared energy of discovering Egypt alongside like-minded travellers.

At its heart is the exclusive charter of the elegant Nawara dahabiya, offering an opportunity to experience the Nile in a way few travellers can. Unlike larger cruise vessels operating fixed routes and schedules, this private charter provides access to quieter riverbanks, lesser-visited archaeological sites, and traditional villages that are often overlooked. The flexibility of travelling aboard a privately chartered dahabiya allows us to venture beyond the usual routes, revealing hidden corners of the Nile and creating opportunities to visit places rarely included on traditional Nile itineraries. Life on board is equally special, with spacious surroundings, a dedicated crew, and ever-changing views of one of the world’s most iconic waterways.

This journey is further elevated by expert guiding, boutique accommodation, and thoughtfully designed experiences that bring Egypt’s extraordinary history to life, from the pyramids of Giza and the temples of Luxor to the Valley of the Kings and beyond. Travelling in a small group naturally fosters a sense of connection, with shared moments of discovery shaping conversations and friendships along the way. Hosted by co-owner Christopher Wilmot-Sitwell, you benefit from deep local knowledge and long-standing relationships that unlock exceptional guiding and meaningful encounters throughout.

A seamless blend of urban dynamism, cultural heritage, and natural splendour, this itinerary is designed for those seeking meaningful connections, off-the-beaten-path adventures, and an insider’s perspective on one of the world’s most captivating destinations.

The Great Pyramids of Giza

Pyramids, Giza, Egypt
Explore the Giza Plateau (with VIP entrance, lounge and buggy), focusing on the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure as your guide brings their history and construction to life. Stand before the Great Pyramid of Khufu and take in its extraordinary scale and precision, while Khafre’s elevated position creates a striking visual effect and Menkaure offers a smaller, more refined contrast. Nearby, the Great Sphinx of Giza completes the scene. There is also the opportunity to enter the Great Pyramid and experience its interior passages up close.

Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM)

GEM, Cairo, Egypt

Visit the Grand Egyptian Museum, a striking contemporary landmark on the edge of the Giza Plateau. Explore its vast, light-filled galleries with your guide, where one of the world’s most important archaeological collections brings ancient Egypt to life. Discover monumental statues, ornately decorated sarcophagi and everyday artefacts spanning over 5,000 years of civilisation. Gain rich context as the story of the pharaohs unfolds, alongside the evolution of religious beliefs and the exceptional craftsmanship that defined ancient Egyptian life.

Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple

Luxor Temple, Luxor, Egypt

Explore Luxor with a visit to the Karnak Temple Complex, walking along the Avenue of Sphinxes as your guide explains the construction of its monumental entrance. Inside, discover how successive pharaohs expanded the complex, each layer revealing deeper history stretching back over 3,000 years. Continue to the Luxor Temple, once connected by a two-kilometre sphinx-lined avenue, where monumental statues of Ramses II dominate a site that has endured floods, invasions and millennia of exposure.

Valley of Kings

Valley of Kings, Luxor, Egypt

Explore the Valley of the Kings, hidden beneath limestone peaks of Gurna Hills on the west bank of the Nile. Once the royal burial ground of the New Kingdom pharaohs, the tombs reveal long passageways and richly painted chambers filled with scenes from sacred funerary texts. With your guide, uncover the symbolism and craftsmanship behind these extraordinary monuments. Visit the tomb of Tutankhamun and the elaborately decorated tomb of Ramesses VI, known for its astronomical ceilings and detailed reliefs.

Hatshepsut Temple

Hatshepsut Temple, Luxor, Egypt

Explore the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, set dramatically beneath the limestone cliffs of Deir el-Bahari. Dedicated to one of Egypt’s most influential pharaohs, Queen Hatshepsut of the 18th Dynasty, the temple is widely regarded as an architectural masterpiece. Its terraces, colonnades and precise symmetry reflect the vision of her architect Senenmut and feel strikingly ahead of their time. With your guide, discover detailed reliefs depicting her trading expedition to Punt, alongside carvings honouring the gods and affirming her divine right to rule.

Deir El Madinah, Habu Temple & Tombs of the Nobles

Habu Temple, Luxor, Egypt

Explore Medinet Habu, where the Mortuary Temple of Ramesses III stands in remarkable preservation. Walk through vast courtyards and along towering walls as your guide brings to life detailed reliefs depicting his military victories, including vivid naval battles against the Sea Peoples. Continue to the Tombs of the Nobles, where richly painted chambers reveal scenes of daily life, from farming and banquets to music and craftsmanship. Move on to Deir el-Medina, the village of the royal tomb builders, offering insight into the skilled community behind Egypt’s greatest monuments.

Temple of Khnum and Esna Lock

Esna, Egypt

Now aboard the Nawara, you’ll begin your first sail towards Esna. Stop to explore the Temple of Khnum, a beautifully preserved Greco-Roman temple famed for its Great Hypostyle Hall, built during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Once buried beneath centuries of Nile silt from annual floods, it now lies nearly nine metres below present-day street level, revealing its extraordinary recovery. Continue with a return to the dahabiya and sail south, crossing the Esna Lock as the afternoon light softens over the Nile.

Temple of Edfu and Bassaw Village

Village from Nile, Egypt

Sail towards Temple of Edfu and travel by horse-drawn caleche through lively streets to the Temple of Horus, one of Egypt’s finest examples of Ptolemaic art. This remarkably preserved Greco-Roman temple, dedicated to the falcon-headed god Horus, offers rich insight into ancient mythology and architecture. Return onboard and continue sailing south towards Bassaw, a peaceful riverside village largely untouched by tourism from the water. Here experience authentic Nile life and try traditional fishing methods once used by ancient Egyptians.

Kom Ombo and Herdiab Village

Kom Ombo, Egypt

Explore the Kom Ombo Temple, arriving by dahabiya as it sails south along the Nile. This striking Greco-Roman temple sits directly on the riverbank and is uniquely dedicated to both Haroeris and Sobek. Its perfectly symmetrical design is reflected in twin entrances, halls and sanctuaries, highlighting its dual purpose. Continue sailing towards the peaceful riverside village of Herdiab, where the Nile scenery drifts past at an unhurried pace along the riverbanks.

Philae Temple, Aswan High Dam, Unfinished Obelisk and Aswan Souk

Aswan, Egypt
Explore the Temple of Philae, reached by a short boat ride across the water to its island setting. Dedicated to the goddess Isis, the temple reflects the legacy of Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilisation. Continue to the Unfinished Obelisk, the largest known ancient obelisk, left incomplete in the northern quarries of ancient Egypt. Proceed to the Aswan High Dam, crossing the Old Aswan Barrage en route, and take in views over Lake Nasser, the world’s largest artificial lake. Conclude with time at Aswan Souk, a lively market filled with colour, spice and local craft.

Optional Add-On - Abu Simbel (additional cost)

Abu Simbel, Egypt
Take a short flight to Abu Simbel and continue to the magnificent Abu Simbel Temples. Explore the Great Temple, fronted by four colossal seated statues of Ramesses II and dedicated to Amun-Ra, Re-Horakhty and the deified king, alongside the smaller temple of Queen Nefertari. Learn how the entire complex was relocated above rising Lake Nasser in a remarkable UNESCO-led rescue operation, preserving every carved detail and colossal figure on its new elevated site.
