Could there be a more enigmatic destination? Travel to the North Pole to traverse over frozen oceans and stand on top of the world.

Why travel to North Pole

Reaching this faraway point is as much about how you get there as it is about being one of the very few people to stand on top of the world. Before you reach the ice, there are opportunities to explore Arctic islands such as Franz Josef Land, Greenland and Svalbard, each of which offers different possibilities for wildlife encounters and landings – think polar bears hunting along the edge of the northern icefields and whales roaming the rich waters. This is another world, an icy desert of otherworldly structures, where the shifting of the frozen ocean provides a different icescape every day, meaning no two visits will ever be the same.
Until recently there were two ways to reach the North Pole: board a nuclear-powered Russian Arktika-class icebreaker, where relatively simple accommodation was part of the experience and charm or take a helicopter to the pole itself from Barneo Ice Camp. With a new, hybrid-powered icebreaker forging a route from Greenland to the pole, there now exists a more luxurious option, with all the toys.

Most exciting of all is arriving via airship. Drifting silently across the northern oceans and icefields before touching down at the North Pole is an experience that we think is worthy of a place on your bucket list. Don’t delay embarking on a polar expedition of your lifetime.

Did you know

At the North Pole, the sun rises and sets just once a year. At the North Pole, there is only either light or darkness. The sun rises around the spring equinox on March 20th and stays in the sky for a full six months before finally setting around the fall equinox on September 22nd.

Celebrate this

The North Pole hosts an annual marathon. Since 2003, the North Pole has hosted an April marathon for the world’s most extreme athletes. The 26.2-mile race is run on a hard snow and ice track with competitors braving frigid temperatures that, in past years, have dropped as low as -20°F (-29°C). The current record for the fastest time at the FWD North Pole Marathon is held by Irishman Thomas Maguire, who ran the race in three hours and 36 minutes in 2007.
