Montana’s magic lies in its wild beauty, from snow-capped peaks and wide-open plains to alpine lakes and star-filled skies. Ride with a wrangler in Big Sky, spot grizzlies in Glacier, or unwind in a remote riverside lodge. Whether you seek solitude or adventure, we’ll craft a journey that captures the true spirit of the American West.

Why travel to Montana

Montana offers one of the most captivating combinations of wilderness, comfort and wide-open space in North America. Its landscapes shift from glacier-topped peaks and vast prairies to meandering rivers and pine-scented valleys, inviting you to slow down and reconnect with nature on a grand scale.

The state is also home to the northern reaches of Yellowstone National Park, where geothermal features meet dramatic scenery and abundant wildlife. Exploring this side of the park means avoiding the busiest entrances and instead discovering hidden trails, backcountry picnics and moments of real stillness, far from the crowds.

Montana’s luxury ranches offer an exceptional way to experience this landscape. These are not typical lodges, but privately owned, design-led retreats with a strong sense of place. Ride with real wranglers, fish on private stretches of river or hike with guides who know the quiet corners of Yellowstone and beyond. Evenings bring seasonal tasting menus, wood-fired saunas and skies scattered with stars.

Whether you are travelling as a couple or a multigenerational group, Montana offers freedom, privacy and access to some of the American West’s most extraordinary spaces, all with a strong focus on comfort and thoughtful hospitality.

We believe travel is precious

The world has transformed dramatically since cazenove+loyd was founded in 1993. On every trip we take, we wonder how that destination will look in another 30 years. We are passionate about our destinations and understand that it has become more important than ever to conserve their wildlife, habitats and communities for future generations.

Our highlights in Montana

Our Destination Expert’s top tip

Montana is all about the great outdoors and that can mean long road trips if you try to see too much of it. I’d suggest picking a couple of spots and spending more time in each to really make the most of your time there.

More wildlife than people

Montana is home to more wildlife than people, with just over a million residents and vast stretches of protected wilderness. It’s one of the only states where you can see grizzly bears, wolves, elk, bison and mountain lions in a single trip, especially in and around Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks.

The last frontier

In the late 1800s, Montana was one of the last true frontiers of the American Wild West. Towns like Virginia City and Bannack boomed during the gold rush, attracting outlaws, vigilantes and fortune-seekers. Many of these towns are now preserved as atmospheric ghost towns, where you can still walk boardwalks, peer into saloons and glimpse the grit of frontier life.

What our clients say
My latest cazenove+loyd adventure was a return to Africa in June 2018, this time to Zambia, Victoria Falls and Botswana. The plan was for three of us but at the very last minute, my friends had to cancel. I had special attention from the staff in each camp. There was a bottle of Champagne waiting at the hotel in Victoria Falls. These are the small touches that set c+l apart.
What our clients say
The Delta was spectacular with an abundance of animals and birdlife. The highlight of this camp was the helicopter flight giving us a 'drone' perspective of the region, during which we could truly appreciate the intricacy of the multiple waterways, lagoons and vegetation. Our gorgeous chopper pilot, all the way from New Zealand, surprised us with Champagne by the edge of a massive lagoon. What a treat!
What our clients say
The highlight of the Kalahari for us was the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The food here was also outstanding, and with each meal, we were seated at a communal table. Overall, our safari was an incredible experience, made up of three very different camps, spending three nights in each and made even more special by our guides and the supporting staff at each of the camps. The care and attention to detail throughout the trip was faultless.
