Kenya, with its distinct seasonal patterns, abundant wildlife, and diverse landscapes, is a wonderful destination at any time of year. However, depending on your travel goals — whether spotting the Big Five, witnessing the Great Wildebeest Migration, or relaxing on an Indian Ocean beach—certain times of year are better suited to specific experiences.
Unlike many other African destinations, Kenya has two dry seasons and two rainy seasons. The Long Rains – Masika in Swahili – occur from March to May and bring frequent rainfall, transforming the landscape into lush greenery. This period attracts millions of migratory birds, especially in the central Great Rift Valley. Whilst game drives can be challenging due to soft, muddy roads, it is an excellent time to see vast flocks of flamingos and impressive birds of prey such as steppe eagles. The Short Rains (or Vuli), from October to December, have similar conditions and tend to be quieter, with lodges often offering reduced rates.
The long dry season from June to September is absolutely the best time for safari. Wildlife congregates around water sources, and the Maasai Mara offers exceptional game viewing and luxury lodges. This period also coincides with the dramatic arrival of the Great Migration in July, when over a million wildebeest crash across the Mara River. The short dry season in January and February is also a great time for safari, particularly as this is during calving season. Combine this with calm coastal weather in destinations like Diani and Lamu, and this time of year offers the best of both safari and beach holiday.
